Paper Cut-Out? Who wants to see an inanimate 2-shaped window? That sounds so dull...

You could say that about Glass, but its ethereal quality works very well with serious programming. Paper Cut Out's 2-shaped aperture has slowly-drifting clouds with blue sky (difficult to appreciate with only low-quality YouTube copies to refer to), so I'd say there's at least as much going on, compared with Glass. I love these early 'arty' ones.

I was being facetious. Smile

I've just read (so this could be complete rubbish) that both Paper Cut Out and Glass were used in Northern Ireland right up until 1997.

Is there any truth in that?

Crying or Very sad I agree with the mainstay that paper cut out was hardly a classic from that package. I'm surprised it's early withdrawal didn't spark alarms with the concept of the windows package......

They seriously need to reintroduce a couple more subtle Idents instead of Swan and Paint Pot at every serious/news related junction especially between 08.00 and 12.00 which is where Optics, Silk and Excalibur should fall straight in. Other than that it's great to see the set back!

Im sure it all goes back as to what can be covered to or up scaled.

'Glass' was indeed used on BBC Two Northern Ireland until 1997 (on most occasions it was played out minus the soundtrack).

I am 99% certain that 'Paper Cut-Out' was never used by BBC Northern Ireland. When the new idents first came into use in 1991, BBC Northern Ireland used 'Glass' for most of their junctions; 'Copper Cut-Out' was another favourite. Only one of the announcer/directors - David Olver - made use of the other idents - though I don't believe he ever used 'Paper Cut-Out'.

Worth noting that for a period in the 1990s, BBC Northern Ireland actually dropped their 'Northern Ireland' branding from BBC Two idents.

Just to clarify, did BBC Two Northern Ireland only do opt out junctions in those days?

Yes, along with BBC Scotland and Wales. Scotland loved Optic alot. Especial with Buffy or simpsons. or De a nis?

So Paper Cut Out was almost certainly seen in Northern Ireland via Network junctions, even though BBC Northern Ireland may never have used the ident itself.

Just to be clear. Not insinuating that anyone has claimed the contrary.

Locally-branded/voiced idents were only used when linking into local programmes, or programmes that were timeshifted as a result of a local programme being inserted into the schedule. In the late-1990s, BBC Northern Ireland began covering all BBC Two junctions from late-morning until c. midnight.

Correct. Might it be seen on BBC Northern Ireland again? You never know.

I hope so. Even if it's just the one time. Unfortunately, it seems to have aged the least gracefully out of all the 2s. It's the cloud animation. It looks computer generated rather than live action. It is the live action aspect present in most of these idents that's allowed them to stand the test of time quite well.

I don't get the fuss, Paper cut out was the least used/relevant ident compared to some of the greats which are being overlooked by network. It's more than likely the least likely to return too.

Have "Paint" and "Neon" been upscaled to HD for AC?
