Does anyone know which of the two versions of Balloon was first aired, originally?

As far as I'm aware, there were 2 versions.

And in England, we got to see big-boxed Kebab

No... he knows that there was two versions - he wants to know which one aired first.
Which was the longer version, if I recall correctly.

Did anyone notice that the logo appeared straight away on the version of Balloon just shown, rather than fading in after a few seconds, as is normally the case.

Interestingly a quick copy-and-paste with a 90s screenshot shows that it doesn't appear to have been zoomed and cropped but someone has actually repainted the background to turn it into widescreen. Nice effort gone into that

Ah, my apologies. I somehow misread the question.
The version that you saw on BBC Two NI tonight at 10pm was officially Version 1 of Balloon. The other version, with the flute trill at the start, was Version 2 (the same flute trill occurs around 20 seconds in on Version 1). Both versions were 30 seconds in duration.

People who take notice to the extent that it becomes nerdy may be a niche group but I've always found it interesting that a common assumption on here is that the muggles either don't care or just don't notice at all. If that was the case, why do idents exist? They're clearly supposed to have some sort of impact on the wider audience and not just on TV Forumites. Most people may not go on about TV idents a lot but then, I find people don't tend to go on a lot about the branding on their cereal box or chocolate bar either. The companies making these things seem to place great importance on what they're called and what they look like, however. It clearly has a function outside nerdery.
If it was just down to the number of people who notice such things, then why do they even bother with idents in the first place. Lets face it, fans of tv pres are quite a niche group.

That makes no sense, so the "new idents" aren't ready, why wouldn't you continue using the old ones.
More likely whoever has overall control of presentation wants to change the package but doesn't have the resources/finances/whatever to do so, so took the decision to reuse what they already had available.

My guess for these idents. They likely commissioned a new package and they missed there end of year deadline and these had to be stopgap. Not complaining as it's lovely to see these back on.

Maybe because of the such good response from everyone. Probably continuity people too.
