The recordings often play to a better standard when played back on the deck that made the recording.

In what way did it give up? I may be able to repair it, depending on the fault. I assume you threw it out, though.

Head corrosion and a very poor repair job. But I still have it under my desk, gathering dust.

I always liked Paper Cut-Out.

I like it too. It may be because it's so elusive and how it somehow passed me by the first time round. I also have no idea what they were going for when they made it. A paper foreground with clouds behind it. The two shadows coming off the '2' clearly made by focusing two lights on the model from slightly different angles but both from around the upper right from the camera's perspective. That highly repetitive, tweeting music. Its off-white colour and mostly static appearance also seems a slight nod to the previous 'TWO' look. It's interesting that you thought it was the least 'weird' one at the time. Looking at it in 2017, I feel it may well be the most weird one they made during that 10 year period.

In one of those examples of its use I gave (10/07/91) it was used without music and a standard "This is BBC Two..." announcement into a party political broadcast. It looks particularly suited for such use.

On a slightly different tack regarding Glass: I wouldn't want anyone to quote me on it but I have a feeling BBC North West used it post-1993. I read somewhere that it was "played out once by accident" but this seems like an assumption rather than known fact. I mean, did someone in Oxford Road really find some disc with it on, ignoring the "Do not use" label? My memory on this is far from reliable as I was a kid at the time but I think I used to see it from time to time more recently than 1993. Certainly, I remember being surprised to learn that it had been withdrawn by the network so early

I never thought paper cut-out would generate such a discussion all these years later! I started annotating all the 2's with a school friend in about '93 or '94. Regarding my earlier observation of seeing paper cut-out on video in class in 1992, I remember thinking at the time that it was rarely, if ever, seen on air anymore. I would support the idea that it was withdrawn from regular use very early on, for whatever reason I'd love to know.

I can certainly recall BBC2 North West using a static Glass ident well after 1993, probably for regional news junctions (remember 3.55pm?) or Thursday's 7.30 political/topical programme. Again, I would back you on this.

Arr. Couldn't replace a head drum, far too specialized a repair, and out of my scope. Curious as to why you would hang on to it.

If it was, indeed, withdrawn at the end of 1991 then it's curious because it wasn't replaced with any new idents. Unless they didn't like it so much that they thought it was not fit for purpose (like Crystal Ball). If I recall correctly, I believe the idents and other pres were played off laser discs at the time, which naturally will have had only a certain amount of space. Could it be that they needed to make room for some Christmas pres and so they had to sacrifice an ident?

Another thing worthy of note is the original programme captions that incorporated the design of one of the idents in the lefthand margin. Pretty sure I've seen variants of every original ident, some even seem to have had more than one... all except Paper Cut Out.

That certainly rings a bell. I do feel I saw it played out properly though and have Sunday morning in mind. Could be a false memory. We'll probably never know for sure.

And even more so if any recordings had been made in LP mode.

Two BBC2 curiosities at 17:30. Firstly the late running snooker actually bumping Coast OFF the air, rather than it being needed as filler. Also, very audible countdown over the CA's earpiece...
