There's a good doggy...
I hope this is the start of a trend and we begin to see the 2 break out of its yellow prison.
The fact that we have these new comedy idents blows Roly Keating's justification for not delivering a Christmas ident last year right out of the water. Roly said he found festive idents hard to justify because of their "limited life span", yet surely these idents have a far more limited shelf-life, being used one night a week for a set number of weeks. Don't forget all those special 2s we had pre-2001, often commissioned for one night only and never seen again.
With any luck Fluffy Dog will encourage BBC2 to take a fresh approach this Yuletide...
Roly's talking rubbish, we should always have new Christmas idents and the fact that BBC1 and BBC2 repeated theirs was unforgiveable. And now we have that Christmas 2 in a block of ice appearing in regular junctions now!! It just seems wrong. The idents are too limiting there is no versatility. The reason why the old 2's worked so well was because it was placed in different situations, like as a venus fly trap, kebab or remote controlled car.
Well, being as though the BBC have still got the Ice Cube ident, I sadly can't see why it won't reappear in 5 months' time. I really hope that there's a new ident this year but if they repeat 2001's for a fourth year running, I will complaing to Roly Keating because that would be appalling. As for BBC1, I've got a feeling that they're going to repeat last year's. If it happened with the other one in 2003, it can happen again.
What has BBC Christmas presentation come to after such a successful 90s?

Speaking of which, now that the "white 2, yellow background" rule has been broken for special idents, if they're lazy why don't they bust out the old 97 - 01 ones during the appropriate programme and stick the new boxed logo on it?
That is of course, if they've still got them....because at this rate, I don't know when Xmas pres will get an overhaul...and TBH it's a pity the latest in the main set (Morris) barely gets shown now. It's about as rare as Fire, maybe even moreso.
And here's the pedigree ident that was used into Catherine Tate.

Were the 3 idents used during the strand, all that were made? Or will there be additional one(s) next time round?

The thing I hated about BBC2 and BBC1 presentation (with the balloon and the pre white/yellow 2's) was that they had so many and yet after awhile just showed the same 6 or 7 all the time. It just got so boring seeing the same ones. I think that when a company has idents that they should go with a set of about 30, or at least enough that you'd have a different one for each link during the day. A bit like how MTV was a few years back. Now they had some extremely good idents, original, unusual you never knew how the logo would be shown.
I'm still hopeful that BBC1's logo will change before the start of the new autumn season, but that just looks more and more like wishful thinking.

I've been away for the past few days and have just seen the new idents and I have to admit I was a little shocked to the content of the ident. When I originally saw the dog in the promos I wasn't thinking that it would end up sniffing other dogs and humping them. I personally don't like them and would, all though I hate to admit it, rather see Formation or Morris Dancing used. However it is nice to see that there is some more creativity appearing all though I am sure that the dog Two could be used against the usual yellow background in a slightly less dirty scene.
Out of interest where is the usual ident music on these and are there three new idents?

Very good idents. I agree that it nice to have a bit of difference eveyr now and then.
I also think that they are a bit strange with them humping the dog and things, I'd have preferred it to stay cute like in the trailers, but it's still welcome.
It is strange that these have no music to go with them, I'd have liked to hear some to connect them to the other idents.
Out of interest how were these created? The trailers seem as though it must have been added to have it move, especially from the angle. Yet these seem as though the '2' was actually there. Is there anychance that it was somebody dressed in green against a green background moving the two from behind?

Very good point. You very rarely get idents without any sort of music whatsoever, and these (3 idents) do feel out of place in that respect.
I was, and still am, hoping for a couple more idents, or a sort of generic ident, like the shot of the 2 on the website against that blue background, with some music. But considering the content of these already shown, that seems like an absolute long shot, nigh on impossible to occur.

Wasn't the whole point of the theme tune all about recognition. Jane Root talked some crap about how in the multi-channel universe meant that the new yellow 2's and music would stick out. This has now proved to be utter rubbish!! People know what channel they're on so ditching all of those unique 2's was a mistake that I don't think they've ever truly recovered from.

The current set of yellow background 2's all have a 'jingle' that links them together.
The previous sets of 2's from 97 - 01 also had music with some similar jingles or instruments, but IMO they were nowhere near as identifiable - yet they were still better.
This was at a time where the '2' didn't need a personality, at a time when most idents would probably now be deemed suitable for sombre occasions if placed alongside the current set.
As simple as it looked, showing a 2 being splashed by a wave or simply rotating it and filming the shadow, worked. Especially as there were so many idents to stop the set becoming boring, and the 2 was always clear in each.
The only Ident I really like in the main set, excluding seasonal/Xmas idents, is Invisible Walls; one of the few idents in which the 2 does not show a personality, so to speak.

The thing was that each 2 in the old days all had different music accompanying it, so I don't know why they think we needed a theme to know we were watching BBC2. When you look at some of the new 2 idents the theme is only on for a few seconds so if you were in another room you wouldn't here it anyway. Jane Root and Lorraine Heggessey were just going through 'new house syndrome.' Once you move into a house you want to change everything, but sometimes things work and you leave them alone just tweaking here and there. That's what they should have done with the balloon and the old 2's just add to them but keep them going.
