Just witnessed something quite unprecedented tonight. Scotland, Wales and NI have been taking Network continuity on BBC One and BBC Two. Noticed this on BBC Two NI and Wales after midnight. However, BBC One Scotland just came out of a News 24 break and then took Network BBC One continuity. BBC One Wales also took Network continuity at 2.10am.

Haven't noticed this mentioned elsewhere on the forum.

Is this the latest money-saving tactic then?

Was this during The Sign Zone?

I think it's a regular occurence that if BBC1 hasn't handed over to News 24 in the early hours of the morning that network continuity is taken by BBC Scotland at least.

The standard practice in Scotland has always been to man Presentation until the handover to News 24 or the junction into Sign Zone - whichever is the earlier.

Remember it's barely 10 years since BBC Scotland - and presumably the other nations - did not cover Saturday and Sunday mornings or late closedowns.

Well BBC Wales is usually the more reliable of all them; they've always been more prone to blocking out Network continuity. They are usually there on BBC One and BBC Two until just after 2am. It was very strange to see Network continuity on BBC Two Wales before 1am.

BBC NI also usually stays up until around 2am. Network continuity was coming through there on BBC Two before 1am too.

BBC Scotland was showing football on BBC Two until 2.45am. There was local continuity there into News 24. However, BBC One Scotland had a News 24 break from 1,50am until 2.10am. At 2.10am they left News 24 and joined Network immediately, with Network continuity into the next programme.

Sign Zone or not, the presence of Network continuity before 2am was very odd - particularly on BBC Wales and NI.

Also, there was no picture/sound on BBC One NI and BBC Two NI on DSAT from c. 2.30am until shortly after 3am. The interactive services remained available throughout. Was this engineering work in Belfast? Analogue BBC One NI/BBC Two NI did not seem to be impacted.

Perhaps BBC Belfast had a power shut down or similar for maintenance work. Divis and the other analogue transmitters would have switched themselves to RBS from Darvel in Ayrshire ?

Ceefax P160 would have been a giveaway !

Analogue wasn't impacted at all. Local Ceefax was still available.

Of course, it could just be another example of the BBC's lack of regard for its audience; carrying out engineering work and not informing viewers. Cool
