From BBC News in 2003:

Quote:
BBC Three's big moment has arrived.

Viewers can expect "imaginative and intelligent" programming for the 25-34 age group as well as "creative risks", according to the channel's controller Stuart Murphy.

Murphy, 31, came up with fresh ideas for the channel, which is replacing BBC Choice, after Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell told him it was it was not "distinctive" enough.

But BBC Three will not just be under the watchful scrutiny of its rivals, such as Channel 4's digital arm E4, MTV or Sky One.

The government will review BBC Three's progress in 2004 and decide if it is fulfilling its public service remit.

Consequently, strict guidelines have been set out for the channel, which will broadcast from 7pm to 4am each day.

It must "embrace" drama, entertainment, news, current affairs, education, music, the arts and science, as well as including coverage of international issues.

And 15 hours of science, religion, ethics and business must be broadcast, plus a 15-minute peak-time news show and hourly 60-second bulletins delivering five news stories.

BBC Three's schedule for a Saturday night in August 2006:

19:00 Top Gear (repeated from last Sunday on BBC Two, and also to be repeated again on BBC One)
20:00 Days of Thunder (a film from the 80s)
21:45 Rambo - First Blood (a film from the 80s)

The channel really has sunk to an all-time low, hasn't it?

You forgot its repeat last Tuesday at seven on BBC Two!

Haven't watched the channel for ages. It's dreadful.

Its still Two Pints of Stale Lager and a Mouldy Packet of Crisps taking up most of the schedule. Rolling Eyes

The only time I ever watched the channel was to catch up on EastEnders. Since NTL started offering it over VOD, I've not gone near the channel. It's like BBC Choice really, that started promisingly with loads of decent original programming, but by the end was total tripe. BBC Three was less impressive, but still good, but has suffered the same fate (but even worse).

I honestly cannot see the point in this channel. Apart from EE episodes, it might as well be UKTV GOLD.

The BBC should turn BBC THREE into a channel like ITV3 - showing the classic programmes. It would get much better ratings!

Isn't that the job of BBC4 though?

In my opinion the original version of BBC Choice was the best, but then it went gradually downhill, peaked again when BBC Three launched but has now gone downhill again

Not that I'm aware of.

I thought BBC4 was there to mop up the intelligent stuff BBC2 fails to show as much these days.

I've stopped looking at BBC3 schedules - EastEnders should only be repeated on BBC1 on a Sunday or maybe during daytime. The endless Little Britain repeats on BBC3 have also helped to completely devalue both the show and the channel IMO. Anything good will turn up on BBC2 eventually anyway.

It's tricky for BBC Three, because they want to try and produce quality drama and comedy on a restricted budget.

The result is that they go for quality rather than quantity and have to show a fair few repeats.

For example their recent dramas Drop Dead Geogeous and Sinchronicity (both of which average a very healthy 400-500k viewers) would have cost a fair bit, but I'd rather they produced that then lots of rubbish to fill up a schedule (the later BBC Choice days).

I imagine a fair whack of their budget has also gone on the set piece drama of their autumn season- Torchwood- even with BBC One co-funding it.
