BBC THREE versus BBC SCOTLAND

Is it time for the BBC to make a really tough decision?

The Nine is just more news put in a slot that doesn't affect the Beeb's other news programmes, despite the fact that you have 45 minutes of Scottish, UK-wide, and international news on One at 10. There's no reason for it.

No, as discussed earlier, you have 45 mins of Scottish, English-masquerading as UK-wide, actual UK-wide, and international news

I was quoting The Nine's description on the Beeb's website in an attempt to show the similarities of the two. Honestly The Nine can probably be more closely described as Scottish Newsnight due to the length, material, and color scheme. Just with Scottish news that your going to hear at 10:30 anyway.

BTW There used to be Newsnight Scotland on BBC2 Scotland up until 2014

But really, what's the point of BBC Scotland? It's like FOX in the US; a glorified programming block. With network BBC Two in it's downtime, despite the fact that 2W had regional continuity (ok, that was because Two Wales still existed on analogue, but still). It's just BBC Two with a bit of regional programming for a few hours and news because its not like BBC One Scotland has enough regional news (not to mention STV has two regions, and then ITV Border in the south). The Nine is just more news put in a slot that doesn't affect the Beeb's other news programmes, despite the fact that you have 45 minutes of Scottish, UK-wide, and international news on One at 10. As you rightly say, it's more news, but it's content that makes it easier for the channel's remit of 50% original programming to be achieved. It would be struggling to hit the target otherwise.

With the relative scarcity of new shows due to the pandemic I wondered if repeats of programmes commissioned for BBC Scotland counted as original programming. If not, perhaps the daily briefings are doing more than just informing the public?

Just had a wierd idea. What if the BBC were to buy all the Local TV channels in Scotland - Channel 8 and make that BBC Scotland.

There would be the Nine and Seven in their current timeslots but followed by some local Scottish news.

This is very interesting....but I strongly doubt that the BBC has money to buy them right now....

They already have BBC Scotland. During a time when they’re criticised endlessly for how they spend their money, this isn’t even close to being a smart move.

More news is not what BBC Scotland needs, although it's a cheaper and safer bet than formats which fail to connect with viewers and only get one series.

Then the solution is just to close the whole thing down....and reopen BBC3 instead

If the BBC Scotland channel was closed there is a much higher chance of the money saved being directed to BBC Scotland (the organisation) to spend on their other services and production, such as relaunching BBC Two Scotland (which you may remember was closed to allow for the creation of the BBC Scotland channel).

It will not magically end up back in London with a bunch of people going "oh, I wonder what we can spend all this extra cash on" just waiting for some Twitter campaign to remind them they closed BBC Three down several years before.

I really appreciate your point of view, but I also have to remind that the BBC has hinted on the possibility of relaunching BBC Three as an actual TV channel
