Haven't seen this posted yet - a Brand New brief look at the logo. I tend to agree with what's said in this article. The concept isn't terrible, but the execution could be a little better.

Its just to look different from everything else on BBC iPlayer.

The logo isn't the best, but what really annoys me is the lazy and sloppy execution of the on-air package. Arial for **** sake!

I wonder if the move online will mean the Channel Islands will now get BBC Four in HD on Freeview (as we currently only get BBC1/2/3 and C4 in HD)...

If you do it will be at the expense of CBBC as they'll have to bring CBeebies with it too.

Not just the Channel Islands of course, lots of the country don't get the extra HD MUXs

Yes, only carried by 30 (out of 1154) transmitters, so coverage is around 70% of the UK population

My understanding is that PSB 3 currently has enough null packets that CBeebies/BBC4 HD could be carried right now alongside CBBC/BBC 3 and the other four HD services, so it's a bit of a mystery way not ? I suspect some sort of draconian PVT/BBC Trust/DCMS directive that it can't ?

Yep - looking here : http://en.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.php?liste=1&live=9&lang=en&mux=BBCB it looks like there are about 10Mbs (i.e. 25%) of the mux occupied by null packets, though this is with undemanding content on all networks at the time of sampling.

PSB 3 (aka BBC Mux B on that site) is carrying :
BBC One HD
BBC Two HD
CBBC/BBC Three HD
ITV HD
C4 HD
Film 4+1 SD

The HD channels appear to be configured to average at around ~4.5Mbs but to be able to peak at ~17Mbs? I wonder if there is some null packet capacity that gets eaten into on occasions to cope with peaks? Or it could be that there is some capacity being held for a few more SD PSB channels?

That said, if the BBC could squeeze BBC Four/CBeebies or BBC News HD onto PSB3 and avoid paying Arqiva for space on Com 7 that would be a saving. And I'm sure the BBC would like that...

Or, I wonder if that headroom is left to protect the third party channels (mostly ITV and C4) from any bit rate starvation due to peaks in demand from the BBC HD channels ? Contractually providing minimum subjective picture quality
and minimum guaranteed bandwidth could well be a bit of a legal minefield ?

Also of course, the mux has several different versions carrying differing national/regional versions of BBC 1, and ITV and more significantly the HD versions of UTV and STV, further complicating stat mux considerations ?

The two SD red button streams used last year for Wimbledon are still on the EPG. I suspect one of these was destined to be BBC1+1 but unless the space is sold in the meantime I would hope and expect they're retained for Wimbledon and the Olympics this year, though wouldn't be surprised if after that if the space is reallocated (perhaps to CBeebies/BBC 4HD).

Once any HD switchover takes place even without closing any services the BBC could have their HD channels on Freeview, plus non-core channels like BBC Parliament and the red button in SD, all on one mux, allowing the BBC to close their SD simulcasts and in theory halving the capacity they use (though probably not halving the cost!) Satellite of course is causing a separate issue as although they'd effectively be removing a small number of simulcasts but to get full coverage in HD would likely require at least the same space, if not more. That could be the justification for scaling back on the sub-regions at least over the next decade or so.

My understanding is that the space for the extra red button channels was just bought in for the summer. I'd have thought the EPG places have just been kept to keep them for this summer.

Shows how far we've come. From London 2012 of having every event in HD/SD, to possibly 1 extra channel via DSat/Freeview (maybe 2 if they hijack BBC Parliament again) for this year.

I fully expect regular and repeated plugs to go to the website, or the BBC Sport app to find everything during Rio 2016
