BBC Three Rebrand

The new look launches on screen on Saturday 9th February . That day also see's the launch of one of their biggest new shows - Lily Allen and Friends.

This is probably the first time I've ever seen a channel use two different looks in a transitional phase. With BBC1 and BBC2 (and any other channel for that matter) the outgoing graphics are used for absolutely everything up to and including the day before the rebrand, even to promote programmes which won't actually start airing until the new look has been unveiled.

But we've now got the new BBC3 graphics being used in promos - including on the channel itself - way ahead of the proper launch. Very strange seeing one of these new "shocking pink" trails followed by a Blobs ident.

It was the same when BBC Choice changed to BBC Three with a transition period.

Forgot about that!

But that was all still "Choice" branded wasn't it? With the men at work idents.

There are some captures of these (well, the Christmas versions) at TV & Radio Bits.

It seemed a less drastic transition however, since BBC3 kept the blue of its predecessor while the new BBC3 goes from one colour extreme to another.

BBC Three New Drama Promo

With all of the new programming and a new feel coming to the channel as well as a rebrand, it is going to feel like a completely new channel. I think the mixture of the two brands is to symbolise that BBC3 is changing not just with idents and is also an attempt on not to alienate male viewers, most of whom will not like the pink logo.
