* Torchwood - you're probably right that this would have ended up on 2, but by putting it on 3 for a year it allowed them to iron out a lot of the glitches, effectively doing a pilot series, and get the product right for a bigger audience. People who watched it on 3 get to see it from the start, and they iron out the problems for the more mainstream audience on 2. If it hadn't started on 3 I don't think it would have got a second series.
Can I point out that every episode of TW S1 ended up on BBC2 primetime *within a week* of their first showing on BBC3?
Hell,
Life on Mars
&
Heroes
episodes debuted* first on BBC4 & BBC3 respectively with
a full week
before their BBC1 & BBC2 showings, despite the fact that they were mainly advertised as BBC1 & 2 shows. And other shows have trod a similar path - they were just the first two that leapt to mind. Calling TW a "BBC3" show in that context is a bit hollow when S1 got over twice as many viewers on BBC2 for each ep after the first couple.
*Yes, I know Heroes S1 was on Sci-Fi first, but I'm talking about how the Beeb treated them.

If BBC3 had existed decades ago they probably would have picked up The Simpsons.
Only if Sky had never existed - Simpsons is a Fox (proprietor: R. Murdoch) show, remember?
I agree, although I find it amusing the way they twist figures around to suit their purpose.
Cost of new idents is £1 per viewer.
Mmmm, that would be asuming they were paid for in one day! However, since the idents will last for a while (let's say 3 years) and used every day - even without any increase in audience that equates to less than £0.001p per viewer!
Not quite the same headline is it?

Why is anybody taking seriously a comment made by the Daily Whail? It's obvious their readership is going to dismiss BBC Three as trash TV. The hacks are simply giving their readers what they want to hear: "it's not like it used to be, the world's going to the dogs, be scared - the youth of today are dangerous".
Let them continue on their lowly unbalanced rant and keep them off the streets for a bit.
