Who was it who predicted a BBC Three-Radio 1 Merger?

Radio Killed The Video Star?

The proposal sounds like Andy Parfitt's short lived "BBC Switch" initiative from 10 years or so ago.

Radio 1 and BBC TV have done many cross-media initiatives and none have really worked. There was the Top Of The Pops radio show on Sunday afternoon in the 1990s, Radio 1 TV on BBC Choice.

Ironically, the most useful support BBC TV has given to Radio 1 programming and the best examples of cross-media initiatives are live linear broadcast TV coverage of music events covered by Radio 1 which of course BBC3 can no longer do as it goes online.

Also, one of the proposed BBC/Flextech channels was to have been a 'TV version of Radio 1', which eventually launched as UK Play.

It was proposed as one of the BBC digital channels, rather than part of UKTV.

The working title was BBC ONE TV... Not to be confused with BBC1 Confused

Yes, my understanding was that what is now the UKTV network was originally going to be BBC branded channels, as reported in this contemporary Independent article: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/flextech-to-inject-pounds-20m-into-bbc-deal-1270994.html

Quote:
Initially the venture will produce five new channels: BBC Showcase, an entertainment channel; BBC Horizon, documentaries; BBC Style, lifestyle; BBC Learning, for schools, and BBC Arena, for the arts. Three further channels are scheduled: BBC Sport, BBC Catch-Up, for repeats of popular programmes within days of their original transmission, and BBC One, a TV version of Radio One.

…but my understanding is there was disagreement over the use of commercials, which Flextech wanted but the BBC didn't on BBC-branded channels in the UK, although there isn't any source online to confirm this.

Anyway, I've always thought that UK Play was the spiritual successor to what Radio 1 TV would have been? Even though it launched later on, with BBC Sport the only channel that didn't end up launching somehow

BBC Showcase - BBC Choice
BBC Horizon - UK Horizons
BBC Style - UK Style
BBC Learning - BBC Knowledge
BBC Arena - UK Arena
BBC Sport - N/A
BBC Catch-Up - Also BBC Choice?

I still think it's a shame that UK Play failed, but then again we probably wouldn't have Dave if it still existed

a dystopian look at an alternate future where the popular linear channel ceases to exist, but tries to manipulate people into thinking it's still alive.

Remain indoors and do not think about the Event.

can someone enlighten me - when BBC Three moves on line - will it still be a streamable linear type channel with a schedule or will shows just be released on IPlayer sporadically?

There is no linear channel. It's just BBC Three-branded shows being put on the iPlayer that would've otherwise been shown on the BBC Three channel.

It's still a channel though, by modern standards. You ask the average teenager what their favourite channel is and they'll probably say Zoella or such like.

The BBC Trust insisted that the channels be separated in to those run by the corporation and those run at arms length, with advertising (which became the UKTV network). The initial plan was for there to be cross-promotion in trails - not unlike how the BBC advertise BBC Worldwide home video releases. BBC Showcase and Catch-up were replaced in part by both BBC Choice and UK Gold (which was not intended to be part of the BBC joint venture initially).

It seems like BBC Three is very proud of its latest commission. From Tuesday, that's all it seems to be showing. An interesting programme called "BBC Three has moved online," a dystopian look at an alternate future where the popular linear channel ceases to exist, but tries to manipulate people into thinking it's still alive.

Joking aside, the description simply tells people to go to bbc.co.uk/bbcthree. I hadn't realised that this takes people straight to the Daily Drop. I hope that changes once the channel dies because sending people to that piece of s**t when they're in a midst of confused panic as to where their favourite channel has gone is simply torturous.

If you look at the EPG between 2am and 4am on Wednesday to Saturday there are actual programmes scheduled. They appear to be completing the series of Some Girls, Josh and Uncle that have their first episodes shown on closing night. I assume this so that people can series link them or is a way of getting them onto iPlayer indirectly.

Probably just to hold on to the EPG slot a bit longer. Sky in particular have strict rules over the minimum amount of scheduled programmes.
