BBC2 eyes Family Guy as BBC3 plans shape up

4 September, 2014 | By Alex Farber

The BBC wants to establish a dedicated home on iPlayer for BBC3 under plans to take the channel online, while Family Guy is likely to move to BBC2.

A dedicated team established to map out the future of BBC3 is finalising its plans to submit to the BBC

Trust this month. Insiders have indicated that the plans are much more ambitious than a simple “lift and shift” of the existing channel.

The main pillar of the proposals, which are being overseen by daytime controller Damian

Kavanagh, is expected to include the development of an online hub for BBC3 to act as a dedicated home for its programming and related editorial content. BBC3 currently has a channel presence on iPlayer from which it links to its shows, but has little supporting content.

The BBC3 iPlayer proposition will also host a range of short-form programming that will not air on linear TV. While the BBC has mooted plans to feature BBC3 original commissions on BBC1 or BBC2,

Kavanagh has indicated that he does not want all shows to be governed by the constraints of linear TV schedules. Rivals such as Vice Media have shown that content does not have to be restricted to traditional 30-minute and 60-minute slots.

Finally, the BBC is exploring the possibility of airing Family Guy on BBC2 after failing to resolve a long-running dispute with 20th Century Fox over featuring the series on iPlayer, due to piracy concerns.

Seth MacFarlane’s animated show, which regularly attracts more than 500,000 viewers to BBC3, is being eyed by BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw as a way to help the channel appeal to a younger audience.

She has already poached Russell Howard’s Good News and Backchat With Jack Whitehall And His Dad.

The BBC3 plans are expected to be submitted within the next few weeks, enabling the BBC Trust to kick off a six-month public service value test. The aim is to close the channel in autumn 2015.

Of course if there could move newsnight to bbc news, it would free up a lot of space.

I'd be surprised if that happened, but certainly it'd solve BBC2's late night post Newsnight slot, because it's just a dumping ground for repeats at the moment, we'd certainly hark back to the mid to late 1990's when they used to show the likes of Seinfeld and The Larry Sanders Show after 11.15pm, and if they managed to get Amercian Dad onto BBC TWO aswell then certainly that would cement the slot quite nicely.

For the "Closing BBC3" argument, this is would certainly be the easiest way to justify the closure, sadly.

Of course if bbc2 were able to use the 9pm-10.30 slot of new bbc content, and use 7pm-9pm for bbc programmes then this might work.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't move Family Guy to BBC Two seeing as it's one of BBC Three's most popular shows.

There used to be an issue with The Simpsons on Sky One where NOW TV customers couldn't watch it. They can now watch it as per the Sky One schedule, but isn't on catch-up.

That could be a resolution where BBC Three streams the show, but not kept on iPlayer. However, I suspect Family Guy will get a regular post Newsnight slot on BBC Two, although I doubt it'll be on 7 nights a week.

New Family Guy episodes are shown on Sundays on BBC Three. I'd expect that this would probably stay the same with BBC Two, so Newsnight wouldn't be an issue.

Agreed. I think we'll see what would be new BBC Three shows, such as Good News and Backchat at 10pm on weeknights as well, with new FG on Sundays around 10pm.

Question is, would BBC2 want to schedule repeats of FG after Newsnight on a regular basis?

The ideal place for much BBC 3 content is BBC 2 at 10/11pm, so why not move Newsnight over to BBC 1 following the news, freeing up that time to make a decent slot, rather than 30mins and a dump post-11.15?

What about all the shows that get slotted in by BBC one at the 10.35 slot? Scotland already push network content on Tuesdays and Wednesdays even later as well.

Some could move to BBC 2 at 10/10.30, they obviously won't have such a good lead-in though. Shifted network content will always find a home.

So, why is it on catch-up services in other territories and why are they more secure than iPlayer?
