Does BBC Three have a dedicated pres operation or is it staffed by a director who is looking after other channels? I guess at times when they have live programmes that could overrun like the Big Weekend and the Eurovision semis they might increase the staffing so that the pres can become more reactive?

It's fairly flexible - CBBC/BBC Three share a playout chain, as do CBeebies/BBC Four - and they'll share a director during the day (while another does prep for later) and late at night, but get a director each during prime time. (I'm not sure how this arrangement has changed with the advent of BBC HD)

CBBC and Cbeebies share a director all day
BBC 3 and BBC 4 have a dedicated director from 7pm til 1am (then share with BBC1 and BBC2 from 1am til close)
BBC HD has a dedicated director all the time it's on air

Incidently Two Pints returned for a new series just a few weeks ago with very little advance publicity. TBH it's now in "is that still on?" territory (with only Natalie Casey and Will Mellor left) and hopefully they will kill it after this series.

Oh dear, that's desperate.

To be honest I'm surprised Sheridan Smith stayed in the series for as long as she did, she was always a much better actress than that show (Legally Blonde has shown that), I always thought they'd axe it once she left, actually after Ralf Little left I'm surprised it survived as long as it did. I take it the squeaky bird Louise has left it as well?

Yeah Katherine Drysdale has gone, explained away with a throwaway line, Sheridan Smith's departure got a slightly longer explaination but not by much. When Ralf Little left pretty much the entire of the next season was devoted to Janet's mourning of Johnny, which got rather ridiculous. They've introduced two new characters, Cassie (Georgina Henshaw) and Billy (Freddie Hogan), along with Tim (Luke Gell) who replaced Ralf Little a few years back.

I think with the departure of Last of the Summer Wine, Two Pints is now the BBC's longest-running-and -still-on-air sitcom, which probably says a lot more for the state of BBC sitcoms at this stage than it does for Two Pints. It was never going to win awards for quality but it was a passable show. Now though it really is outliving its welcome though.

Once the final series of My Family ends, I think it will be. My Family is a year old than Two Pints.

Two Pints was really good in its early years and the original casting was really strong. I think it started to go downhill when they killed off Donna's mum. Then losing Kelly was a fairly big blow even though she was only a minor character and replacing her with unbearable clone Tim was a big mistake. The biggest loss was Johnny, followed by Janet and Louise. I also feel Janet & Gaz was a big mistake and contributed to the downfall.

They should have ended it with the episode where they all died in the pub. It is only Two Pints in name now, this series should have been a spin off because they're just unnecessarily dragging it out. Its OK to watch but its nothing special. Sitcoms such as Gavin and Stacey show that it should be left whilst its on top and people have fond memories. The BBC have nothing to gain from keeping it on air, its not as though they're making money from it.

Well, they do have a bit to gain, it's probably quite useful as a training ground for new writers, giving them experience in a long-running series. And as I think it's almost entirely studio-based, it's probably particularly cost effective, and endlessly repeatable of course. But it is indeed an awful, awful programme.

Was anything in the history of television more soul destroying than a BBC Three marathon of "Two Pints". You could see the fixed grin on the 60 Seconds presenters as they repeated for the gazillionth time "Next on Three it's Two Pints" (and silently thought to themselves - "yet again...")

Yeah I agree, it wasn't actually a bad sitcom back when it started, Johnny & Gaz worked together as did the three girls, however the killing off of Flo & Johnny was the start of it, now Sheridan Smith has gone it seems pointless continuing it. Oddly enough my now 62 year old Dad liked watching it, mainly for Sheridan Smith's character, then again Smith was the best actor (along with Ralf Little) and as been proven with Jonathan Creek, Legally Blonde & the Doctor Who Big Finish Audios to name a few.

I've seen that a couple of times across the BBC. I guess it's when the continuity announcer forgets to mention the programme has strong language.
