There are/were a lot more little studios even smaller than that, little rooms with just a microphone, headphones and ISDN unit. They were in municipal buildings like council offices, colleges, leisure centres etc.

They've become less useful with technological improvements over the years, I imagine now that everyone is more experienced in using the sort of remote broadcasting tech that's being relied on now they'll be even less so

I love those photos, and the notes that "some of the tapes are over 25 years old!".
I have T shirts older than that...
I suspect a few of you also spotted the rack of kit at the back of the studio too, which is much older than the old tapes.

BBC to close small regional offices:

Sounds fair enough, in these days when it's so easy to file video or audio from a phone they're not needed.

No mention on Look Levy that the Grimsby studio is closing

I didn't even know they had one there

I believe the one in the basement of Huddersfield Town Hall was particularly delightful.

I used to enjoy browsing the directory of unattended studios on the BBC intranet. As others have said, many were little more than a microphone and an ISDN codec in a far-flung council office, but presumably worth the expense for getting interviews in better than telephone quality.

There's a list of the TV facilities (available to hire if you're a foreign broadcaster) at https://www.bbc.com/internationalunit/facilities/uk-regional.

Yes, the original Wrexham studio was in the attic of the Land Authority of Wales' office, before they opened a proper studio in Wrexham in the mid-90s and closed down the original North Wales HQ in Mold. I did work experience in the Mold office just before it closed and it really was the most rundown, primitive outpost of the Beeb imaginable, the newsroom was so small the reporters couldn't all sit down at the same time.

I don't recall BBC London mentioning BBC White City was closing.

I wonder why Radio York doesn't have any TV facilities?

I'm not sure I would read too much into that list, given the reference to "Carlysle" and the fact they include Jersey but not Guernsey.

In that original Mold office, they had a blind on one wall which they could pull down and which had a "BBC MOLD" logo on it to allow them to broadcast down the line. If they could do TV from there, they could do it from anywhere.

I've never seen Look North take a live from a York studio. They use Sheffield frequently.

But it does not mention Luton which is / was JPEG 2k over ip into Cambridge...

Mold only existed for its roof ...... microwave link to get Bangor into the reverse network distribution microwave links .....became redundant in 2008 ish again
with JPEG 2k over ip Bangor directly to Cardiff

Before ISDN there was the News studios ..copper most if the way with each studio directly connected to the pair down to London ..... a vast party line !
I remember broadcasting from the one in Milford Haven .. imagine a lean to lavatory behind the cinema ... but most were in Town Halls etc ...

I think they might do, that list is 'including' and there's quite a few missing - Dunstable, Worcester etc. I think all the local radio stations have a camera point, AIUI they were put in when News 24 started, a few are still called 'news24 cams'

Incidently the spelling on that page is shocking: Carlysle, Stornaway, Rolling Eyes
