Does it really matter? Most of the population can't get to London to be in the audience anyway. That's why the move to Manchester is a good thing (although no good to me in Plymouth).

Though the Manchester move is for kids and sport - neither of which make a large number of studio audience based shows at TVC currently...

In facilities terms, I think the BBC win.

They have two HDTV studios (TC1 and TC8) - whilst TLS I believe have none. TVC also has better connectivity in terms of phones, vision circuits, satellite downlinking etc. (TVC is often used to downlink ITV stuff...)

TVC also has more medium to large studios, though TLS Studio 1 is popular for a certain kind of audience show.

Bottom line is it depends what kind of shows you are making - some are more suited to TLS, some to TVC.

Thanks Nogging, very informative!

When do ITV use the BBC to downlink stuff?

The audience seating in TLS Studio 1 seems very permanent to me - can they take it out for large shows which would rather their audience a different way, or do all productions in there have to make do with it? It always reminds me of Saturday Night Takeaway that studio, same audience seating just with different sets down the front!

Quite a bit for news and sport - the BBC operates the EBU hub for the UK, so most material via major European broadcasters will pass through there. The connectivity is mostly operated by Siemens, but still based out of CCA in TVC, and the various satellite dishes out the back.

Has anyone heard the rumour that the BBC Television Centre could be sold off by the end of this year?

With the BBC News Centre moving to BBC Broadcasting House in a few years and children's/sports moving to Manchester, will there be enough work for TV Centre to remain.

Look at the shows made at the London Studios. There are a lot for the BBC - Have I Got News For You? Room 101 Graham Norton Show. Will the TV Centre end up dead?

The British Comedy Awards use TLS Studio 1, no audience seating for that show, it's all tables a lá a hotel event.

Manchester is also the closest major city to the geographical centre of the UK, which is better to access for the British population as a whole

The seating at the front can be taken out, the seating at the back is fixed. You can read more about it here --> http://www.londonstudios.co.uk/index2.htm

To answer the original question, if it's a big light entertainment show with audience then TLS. If it's Election Night then TVC.

TVC by train ... is rather fiddly.

Not really. White CIty tube station is less than two minutes walk from BBC TVC.

And Shepherds Bush will soon be getting a mainline station as well.
