Surely that's a disadvantage to TLS Studio 1 though? I'm sure some productions would like to use the full working space - say music shows, for example, so what is the point of the fixed seating being there, why not make it all retractable.

The upper tier doesn't take up any of the usable floorspace.

They're on a balcony built into one of the walls and the lower seating retracts under it.

Have a look at: http://www.londonstudios.co.uk/download/Studio1_plan.pdf

I understand that, but even so surely the space which they are using the balcony for could be better used as floorspace, with the option of retractable audience seating if it is required?

If production companies don't want this permanent balcony tier to be visible in their shows, do they just pull a dark across and use the remaining space regardless? Confused

I think you're getting into a level of detail that can't really be answered here.

You could build the perfect studio in the perfect place if you have limitless money. Everything thereafter is a compromise in one direction or another.

With that logic they could have got rid of the control rooms at the side and made it bigger in that direction too! Or extended out into the scene dock!

They do... but that end is usually where the cameras are so it isn't seen anyway. I can't think of a programme from that studio that hasn't got an audience though

The floor space at TLS1 is exactly the same as YTV 4, but with the seating in place it just makes it look a whole lot bigger.

LWT use to use TLS1 for drama, but as that is now all done on film or on OB, the audience seating is a boon for the masses of general entertainment programmes being made. It's a case of horses for courses - if you want a really massive studio, you could aways use Wembley, but until recently it has had to remain split into two, you could say that a need doesn't really exist for anything bigger than 8,000 sq ft.
