How did they know!!!!? (August 2003)

When BBC Summer was launched, a lot of people here sneered at the BBC promoting summer!

One of the thoughts that crossed my mind was, "What if it rains all summer!? There's the BBC with it's nice trails of people walking through fields and sand dunes, and it's p***ing down!"

But it's been a fantastic summer - wall to wall sunshine mostly! Reminds me of 1976 when I was a (very young!) kid.

As a result, the BBC Summer trails have - in my opinion - really worked.

How did they know!!!?

The BBC control the UK's weather from a small unit at Pebble Mill in Birmingham.

My Desktop 'Sky Alert' has just informed of a death in Birmingham due to a lightning strike... and the British temperature record has now been broken. Sky News link.

Thank God thundery relief's quite close by now......

I think temperatures get hotter just before a thunderstorm breaks, too. Usually means 'we're going to incinerate you just a few hours longer.....'

Woke up to a terrific thunderstorm this morning at 8am (in Wirral). It's been quite cool here all day Very Happy

Noticed on News 24 there was a rare live handover to the weather presenter (Helen Willets). Maybe they're making the extra effort because the record has been broken.

Yesterday N24 had a caption saying that it was 57 degrees celcius in Baghdad - surely not? That must be a mistake, it must have been taken in the sunlight or exaggerated or something...

How has it worked ? Are we to thank the BBC for our summer now ? All it has meant is that more people are outside and not sat in front of the telly Rolling Eyes

We've had some really nice thunderstorms here in Newcastle, but it's still steaming hot.

Strangely, it was not a mistake. Temperatures there regularly reach 50C, and this heatwave has risen temperatures in Iraq even further. If it happened here, the number of people dropping dead would be phenomenal.

Something I thought that I would never be saying on a Sunday, but I can't wait to get back to work tomorrow. We have a superb air-con system at work, it's really really nice to work in especially in this heatwave.
