The BBC is today announcing it will merge BBC Studios and BBC Worldwide to form a single commercial organisation, to be called BBC Studios.

At a time of an increasingly competitive and global market for production and distribution, this new organisational structure will bring the BBC into line with the rest of the industry, integrating programme production, sales and distribution in a single entity.

Apart from a lot of business cards being reprinted Smile , it will be an interesting exercise in smoke and mirrors accountancy. It will allow money to be found to invest in infrastructure whilst hiding the expenditure from direct public scrutiny (a lot of money is going to have to be spent at Elstree) & of course the stars salaries don't have to be published as the commercial arm doesn't have to be as transparent... unless the rules get changed again.

I honestly don't get it, what does the standalone "BBC" actually do or own now then? If BBC Worldwide was distributing things, and Studios was producing it all, now under one thing, how is this not just "The BBC" and the actually single entity BBC does what?

What they do is broadcast the programmes.

BBC News, online and commissions programmes.

I assume all radio output not done by indies or news is classed as BBC Studios too?

News, sport, radio, online etc...

I think this merger makes sense really. Studios makes the programmes and sells them to broadcasters (well that's the intention)and Worldwide sells programmes to broadcasters.

Red Bee/Erricson does playout, and what does BBC Global News do then? (BBC World News obviously, does it have any part in domestic?)

Doesn't BBC Global News handle the foreign language programmes and channels like BBC Arabic, BBC Bengali, BBC Turkey, etc

Is BBC studios commercial?

I sort of like the BBC having a separate arm for commercial stuff.

I wonder if they will produce a new brand for video releases.
