This one looks the worst, so much wasted space

They all look awful but that one does look the worst. I'm not looking forward to their debut at all.

Dare I say it, the first one isn't actually too bad. There seems to have been effort in making the credits not look out of place when there's no ECP (does this new split screen effect have an acronym?!) and guidelines on making the text still legible when boxed in the corner. On my TV the credits to Top Gear were completely illegible when they shrunk the text and moved it to the right. Hopefully this will fix that problem.

I agree with Andrew about the wasted space on the helpline example - surely a balance can be found between using a consistent design and still making maximum use of the screen?

Shame about the credit length being fixed - it makes you wonder how strict they're going to be. As a couple of examples, Neighbours tune could be butchered further to bring it under 30secs and Holby currently runs to about 40 - so it's either a case of quicker or fewer credits.

The big question, will this get around that awful effect of credits jumping a couple of frames at the start of an ECP?

And Buster, any hints as to what ITV are planning? Shocked

(Further examples in the PDF linked on that page - BBC Four's uses the background of one of its idents to a nice effect)

You would. You aren't going to disagree with your paymasters are you?

2 points, firstly... I don't work for the BBC.
Secondly, even if I did it wouldn't mean that I would automatically agree with everything they do.

I'd have thought so, very little at the BBC doesn't have a TLA!

Well, certainly "fewer" for Dr Who, which uses (a) text which is too small and (b) is about 20 seconds too long with that for the new "guidelines".

Oh, and look in further, and BBC3's implementing a rule which reads:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/delivery/durations/index.shtml#creddurations posted:
Opening Credit Durations
Opening credit sequences for programmes for BBC THREE must not exceed 10 seconds. This should be taken into account when commissioning any music or graphic intended to accompany them:

[...]
These durations are not targets to be achieved, but maxima which must not be exceeded.

Bye Bye Dr Who Confidential intro.

Surely the way round this for producers is to have the credits run over the final scene (Friends style, but slower than they did it) and then they can't put ECP over the programme

What's wrong with doing it like they used to & have a long trailer after the programme showcasing several programmes that will be on "...This week On ITV", etc.

Top of the page - "End Credits should run over visually interesting graphics or live action but the content must not be editorially critical to the integrity of the programme or include speech as they may be squeezed to accommodate promotional messages." (my emphasis)

Yes but why did this "rule" have to come in, why do these TV firms no longer listen to the public. No one likes Dogs, no one likes Slugs & no one likes ECP. Yet all of these TV companies are insistant of using them, they are part of the reason why I stopped watching TV as regulary (sp), that and the quality of programmes have nose dived

We didn't like the "slide-on" next-promos a few years ago on BBC ONE & TWO, so it seems as though we are being punished with this.

Personally I will start channel-hopping the minute the credits start. I Sky+ most things anyway, so ECPs advertising the next programme are pretty useless since I will've missed it anyway by the time I see it.

I am most astonished that BBC are doing this first. They know we have EPGs on DTT, DSat and DCab. It's not like they are saving space for adverts. We don't need these constant reminders anyway, it's becoming irritating to the extreme.

If I miss a programme because of my choice I'm sure I'll see it on UKTV 6 months later.

I think the reason why, is they felt that the current ECP is a bit restrictive, so if the ECP was full screen they would be able to run full length promos rather than "Coming Up Next on BBC1, Watchdog". Plus this is the latest fad in ECPs (promos on top, credits at the bottom).

My theory..

Exactly & it doesn't matter how many times they promote a programme in ECP I always miss them anyway As people know from the Harry Hill thread I always end up missing programmes I like, even though I know what time/day they're on Laughing

According tot hat page, 8-% of people (and rising...) start channel-hopping at the first sign of the end credits. I don't think they're making it less likely in their desperation either...

The same UKTV who I've seen ^%&*-up and put the ECPs over a programme rather than the credits more than once? [Not to mention that, even where credits are designed to have the right side covered, they still squash the whole screen over to the left].
