Any suggestion as to what you'd prefer? Best will in the world, the channels are probably fully expecting a good proportion of viewers to start channel hopping the moment the credits begin. They need to do *something* to grab attention while they still can.

Then perhaps broadcasters need to concede that viewers WILL channel-hop and stop trying so hard to fight it. You cannot force viewers to watch endless trails just as you can't force them to watch commercials. My preference would be for the announcer to speak more during junctions, creating a more human touch and lessening the "sausage factory" feel of too many junctions, especially those on the BBC.

I thought the boxes registered what people DID watch, not what they chose not to! Nice idea, but say you did have a box, i doubt there's an option to register what you're NOT watching, let alone WHY not!

Erm...the fact that you watched one particular channel as opposed to another?

And, personally, I won't cut off my nose to spite my face. If I want to watch something, I'll watch it. Whether it's been over promoted, under promoted, I don't care. For me, the promotion or otherwise of a programme is only a small part of the whole thing.

For me it's mostly an irrelevance, because mostly I'll know about the things I want to watch without having it waved in front of my nose during every junction.

SOME viewers, yes. Most I've ever come across (family, friends etc) really don't give two hoots. As long as their shows are still on at some time or another, they tend to be perfectly happy. A combination of trailers and EPG seems to work just fine.

Which could also mean they don't give two hoots about what the ECP is promoting, either.

But all that shows is you didn't watch something. Not WHY you didn't. It isn't going to be read as a deliberate stand against a specific promotion, rather I imagine it would merely be seen as the viewer exercising choice and watching what they liked!

Indeed, but some people might find a reminder somewhat useful. I could point to my own parents and grandparents. The intense promotion doesn't upset them in the slightest. On occasion, I've watched them actually use the ECPs and such and go "ooh, yeah, that doesn't look bad. let's try it." Doesn't mean they have to watch the whole thing either way!

Of course it could. Or, as above, it could just jog their memory. Not everyone keeps a close eye on the schedules, beyond knowing when their favourite regular shows are on.

At this rate ITV's credit guidelines will be better!

Don't speak too soon....you will not like what's being planned at ITV at all!

Jesus wept.

The only thing I'll reluctantly accept is the US style with the credits in the bottom third of the screen.

What's so daft about it (apart from the huge annoyance factor for viewers and taking away control from programme makers) is that as digital takeup increases its never been easier to find out what's coming up next thanks to the EPG, search-and-scan etc.

As I said before - really no point in bothering with credits if you are going to mess around with them like this.

However - i'm sure programme makers will be under orders to retain credits, because if they cut them they will just end up with a longer actual programme.

I'd like the BBC to return to the coming up tonight trails that they used at the time the news moved to 10; certainly better than ECPs and trailer overload.
