Wouldn't the logical thing to do in that situation - if the ECP "must" be used - be to crop rather than shrink it ("pushing" it left or right if need be).

Well they still showed the right-scroller on Neighbours this lunchtime, but they squashed it down to the new thumbnail format... which meant it was totally illegible.

A messy example there on BBC Three (although the blobs background looks quite good).
The main box contained 'Next The Scam Squad' with no video/image (you can imagine how much space was wasted), the bottom left box was 'filled' with 'Tonight 9.00 Filthy Rich & Homeless' and to top it off the credits were completely illegible as The Real Hustle credits are left-aligned to fit in with the previous wallpaper ECP.
What is more annoying is that preceding this mess was a slug during The Real Hustle promoting The Scam Squad and The Scam Squad itself was preceded by the sneezing blob menu which again stated what was coming up Now, Next and Later. Honestly
Another point, due to the ECP also being used for cross channel promotions I hope it does not mean that we see less of the excellent new stand-alone design.

To be honest i doubt neighbours credits will change at all, it took years for them to be adjusted for the last ECP, and with the programme about to disappear off the BBC within the next 9 months is it really worth it? Plus the show will probably be taking a break in the next couple of weeks for Ascot and Wimbledon, so if a new look is introduced it may be introduced then. The other alternative, is for them to wait until Neighbours has its new look, which should air over here from December, and introduce a new style credits then.

I have contacted the person responsbible for Neighbours' broadcasts at the Beeb, but she is away until next week so unless they take the initiative, I wouldn't expect to see any change for that show's credits.

Well visually they don't look that bad but I don't see any need for them. Before, we used to have the announcer talking about what's coming next and that remains except now we get pointless images to illustrate this. Are people really going to be persuaded more to watch the next programme simply because we now have images as well as the announcer? I think not, especially not when the credits are followed by 'the one to watch' and/or a tonight caption.
I'm disappointed that the credits are shrunk to such a small size as they're completely illegible now. I may not neccesarily read all of them but on programmes without credits, such as Spooks, I've always thought there is something missing.
Not a good idea though by the BBC.

I didn't think they were supposed to be using this on credits that were not designed for it. They have adjusted their guidelines for producing credit sequences so that all credits from now will be vertical scrolling in large sized lettering. I'm not sure that this will make them any more legible though, the whole design of the ECP is much smaller than I expected to see.
