BBC Sport - new graphics (Reith font)

The current BBC logo was designed so it would be seen better at small sizes, and that was back in the days of standard definition analogue broadcasts and (comparative to now) low resolution computer monitors. I don't think there's any problem with it scaling to different sizes. It's just that this graphics package is a bit on the small side. Besides, I imagine that people are familiar enough with the three blocks that even at such a reduced size they know it's the BBC logo.

The issue is that the designers have opted to disregard the Logo Guidelines and not maintain the minimum sizing to ensure legibility. It is not a problem with the logo itself.

Has there always been a touchscreen in the BBC Sport studio - I've never noticed it before but even only watching in passing I've seen it used a fair bit in both Football Focus and Match of the Day? They've been using it just now on MOTD2 and occasionally go full-screen with what the touchscreen is showing, controls visible and all. For a little while I thought it was actually being controlled off-screen by someone as the UI kept popping up on the right-hand side but the presenter wasn't touching anything - turns out one of the pundits on the opposite side was doing all the controls which I suppose is a vaguely interesting thing!

Who cares if the logo is legible. We all know what it is. If you can't see the logo and still know what it is - that is good branding! 😉

Also glad they're ignoring all those ridiculous "safe areas" guidelines. If you can't see the graphics, buy yourself a decent TV!

The 4:3 safe areas don't need to be conformed to after digital switchover, and indeed I don't think Final Score's graphics have been 4:3 safe for a few years at least.

Safe areas are still in place - they've just moved to 16:9 safe. Whilst almost all TVs still default to overscan (or simulated overscan) - safe areas are still likely to be used.

UK standard 16:9 safe is 5% from top and bottom, 10% from left and right for general graphics. BBC mandate credits to be 4:3 safe - so they remain safe during an ECP slide, other broadcasters also have exceptions.

I've seen unsafe graphics cropped on 16:9 SD LCD TVs...

Incorrect. 16:9 has safe areas as well. And a lot of flatscreens still overscan 5-10% of the image especially on SD channels (where you can't use 'Just Scan'/No overscan)

There was an EA Sports logo just on the screen with the Premier League table at the end of MOTD2. Was that a mistake?

EA sponsor the Premier League stats for all broadcasters don't they? That said can't recall it appearing beside the table before.

The bigger question of course is why they bothered to show the table after Round 1...

You say "flatscreen" as if something else exists! It's not 1998!

Are there still SD channels too? I don't watch them if there are!

Yes. Not all channels even have a HD version, so I don't believe that last sentence.

You don't believe me? You're assuming I watch *all* channels if so. I don't. I only watch BBC One, BBC Two, BBC News, BBC Four and Channel 4. Very occasionally ITV if it's for sport. All are HD.
