Well no, what I meant is the animation. Instead of them just replacing the old BBC Sport legend with the new typeface, for some reason they decided to make it so the globe flies across the screen right to left and then the BBC Sport logo just fades on in the centre of the screen.

Slightly off topic but didn't the globe in the "tower" when BBC News 24/World rebranded initially spin clockwise instead of counter clockwise?

Yes, they then changed it from being counter-clockwise to being anti-clockwise.

It was supposedly a last minute thing to keep the globe as they were all ready to drop the whole opening ident from the branding in 1997.

The globe eventually of course did go, by 2000.

I think they changed it in 1999 as you can see from this video when they also introduced animated holding slides and the great Grandstand theme remix which was sadly dropped (an opinion which will be controversial I'm sure).

WillPS, I count four if you include the TV Ark ident. Razz

Too true - the controversial bit, anyway. Sounds like a pee-poor fanboy midi recreation.

Is 1999 not "by 2000"? Razz Also, given that the video I linked to was SPOTY1999, on the cusp of the Millennium, I'd say 1999 is a good guess!

PS you're wrong on the Grandstand theme Razz

And it was only Sports Personality Of The Century - any old excuse to stick the Millennium sequence in there and get plenty of mileage out of it before Y2K...

Haha, okay. I guess I do overuse that emoticon.

I guess it depends what age you are when you first remember themes! I associate Grandstand with that remix the most for some reason even though it was only short lived

It could have been great... But honestly, that main trumpet / brass sound - it is a bit naff! Laughing

There's no depth to it. Sounds too flat. No bong. A wee bit of reverb and less use of a Yamaha Portatone PSR-76 could have gone a long way. You can't beat a full orchestra, real guitars, timpani.... I like to put this on loudspeaker and annoy the neighbours.
