Hello all.

Regarding the BBC Sport Ident from 1988 (the first time BBC Sport was uniform branded) does anyone know who or which company designed this logo? It was also used on VHS and cassette tapes if I remember.

Also were the subsequent idents that were similar but basically flashier versions (better CGI work) so I assume it would have been the same person that worked on these also.

Credit to TV-Ark for the images.

Many thanks!

You may be interested to know that the original BBC sport ident had to be remade in 1989, with the globe ending its spin at a different axis. The remake was done after it was found on the original that the globe was spinning the wrong way round!

How the heck did such a mistake happen when a rotating globe had been used as the BBC One logo for more than 20 years at that point!?!

That's a very good question, that even I would love the answer to!

Slightly off topic but didn't the globe in the "tower" when BBC News 24/World rebranded initially spin clockwise instead of counter clockwise?

Maybe it wasn't really a mistake, maybe whoever designed it never intended it to represent the world. Maybe they saw it as a globe rather than a planet.

Indeed, it went the wrong way for the first few days.

Perhaps the animator thought it was due impartiality for the BBC to feature a globe that didn't always go to the right?

It's one of those odd bits and bobs that briefly survived the 1997 rebrand too. It looks strange:

Yes it was weird how they did that.

Well the 1997 rebrand was very much a "If it's broken, fix it, if not don't" money saving exercise, not just a "Let's change everything". Like the BBC Two '2' I imagine they deemed this strong enough to not need a change.

One of the little things to survive was the 'BBC in the Midlands' plughole logo (albeit in a new box, lasted a year - this was seen on a mousemat I saw on the internet somewhere) [as an aside Pebble Mill was one of the few who captioned everything 'BBC Pebble Mill' until about 1999/2000, despite guidelines wanting 'BBC Birmingham' and 'BBC Manchester']
