I've noticed since late this year that for news and event coverage, David Dimbleby is notably absent, like tonight and the Festival of Rememberance. It is being fronted by Huw Edwards. I was expecting Dimbleby to pop up for the Conservative leadership coverage.
Is he scaling down his roles, and Huw taking over. Do you think we could see Huw Edwards anchoring Vote 2005?
I was thinking this - and I do agree with you. I think we can expect a larger role for Huw in Vote 2005. Although it says that David Dimbelby is at the cenotaph tommorrow. Question Time with Edwards will be next. Whether or not this is a good thing or not is another matter.
We haven't really had a major national event for a while (apart from Iraq, but I don't think there was a single programme on BBC1, presented by the likes of Dimbleby), so we don't really know whether Dimbleby is still being used. He was used for September 11th (on the actual day in 2001, and the one year on coverage in 2002), the Queen Mother's funeral, the Jubilee, and the usual Cenotaph coverage. He'll probably still present major events on BBC 1, but it does seem that Huw Edwards is getting a slightly more important role at the BBC - could he be Dimbleby's successor eventually?
Dimbleby might be out of fashion at the BBC (along with: the Globe, anything remotely traditional, anything remotely British, anything remotely pro-American).
So that'd mean he's being "eased-out"...they call it constructive dismissal.
Canadians have been down this path before. The CBC went absolutely bananas in the 1970s and 1980s, as it became more and more unusual with the introduction of more and more foreign media from the United States. Only now, in the 2000s, is the CBC starting to become more mainstream.
The BBC might learn from this...although I get the feeling that you can't tell the current management at the BBC anything (so much for accountable public services).
I think Huw is perceived (rightly in my opinion) as being more friendly/accessible and I can't really see David Dimbleby presenting tonight's Festival of Rememberance for example.
Incidentally, is this the first year's Huw has done it, or did he do it last year as well? Nice to see the various inserts about BFBS.
Brian Hanrahan commentated on the Festival of Remembrance last year I believe - rather than David Dimbleby. I think Dimbleby did the Cenotaph.
I suspect that Huw is "the next in line" as the main BBC events anchor - there has to be a succession in these roles as David may be considering retiring...
Huw is certainly more than competent in the role - and a pretty unflappable broadcaster, in the same mould as Dimbleby. I think he is also seen as more accessible - especially after the slightly out-of-date, out-of-touch, Jubilee procession commentary that we got from David last year. (His comments about Chinese restaurants with Wayne Hemingway were toe-curling)

Err - it could mean he is considering retiring, or at least scaling back on his broadcasting commitments...
Also did anyone see the Ident into the rememberence coverage. This time last year Ballet was used (which unless it was this year, would have been its last airing)?

I missed the start unfortunately. Has Ballet definitely been withdrawn? If so, why? If it has, then the most sombre of the idents now is Skateboarders - perhaps that was used?
