BBC1 viewers in the South West and Channel Islands were treated to a weather forecast from London from Darren Bett just before the end of Spotlight this evening. Unfortunately, due to there being no widescreen broadcast facilities in Plymouth, it was rather horribly cropped with the bar at the bottom of the screen being half chopped off...

The forecast was almost up to the usual South West standard, tide times were present, but no surf conditions and as it was from London, no local child's weather picture at the end....

Did any other region get a local forecast from Darren during their local news? If not, I wonder why either David (Braine) or Craig (Rich) were unavailable tonight?

(Also, slightly off topic, but worth mentioning, a special Sports programme will be going out at 7pm on Wednesday, so BBC1 South West will be opting out of Bargain Hunt!)

Sounds like Plymouth were fed with a 4:3 full-screen feed which they then masked/cropped to 14:9 rather than being fed a 14:9 letterbox version - which would have been fine.

Maybe David went ill and it was either too late to call in Craig or he was busy. It would explain the oddness of the picture.

Incidently BBC London used Darren Bett tonight, he was live - I wonder if the South West's was recorded or if they squeezed him in between the London and national forecasts?

As does Wales, Mr Harvey.

Indeed, Sir, most of this evening spent on the project, if I'm not mistaken.

I wasn't trying to exclude Wales when I talked of the Wednesday 19:00 slot; purely indicating that that's the tiny, half-hour slot that the English regions are dedicating to the matter.

As ever, the Welsh know how to do it PROPERLY.

As I stated earlier, Craig will be south of the equator by now for his lengthy Christmas break. I THINK David does projects for the Met Office in Exeter on Mondays, so it will all have been planned in advance.

Don't know about the others, Mr VAT Crime, but south-west is certainly using the "give something back" tagline.

I think just Wales and possibly Scotland and Northern Ireland take Bargain Hunt.

And London.

And East.
