Actually I disagree about the 2 where he flips the card. It s been designed to be flexable enough to alter, like when BBC Four Launched, although it would be a lot of extra work for each region.

I was thinking about this - I can't remember if the BBC Two fades on once the card has twisted (easy to invisibly replace with a re-positioned BBC Two and add a region) or whether the logo is on it as the card turns. (More difficult to remove the existing BBC Two and add a twisting repositioned regional one - certainly in-house in regions with only static gfx kit... You'd need at least a Hal or Paintbox FX to do it nicely - rather than an older Paintbox Classic, V series or Express)

BBC TWO here in the South East always seems to do something odd with their ident (Bounce) before the regional Thursday programme. At the end, the ident usually flicks, quickly, to the 'south' version - this week, right at the end, the 'south east' ident faded into the 'south' version, within a few frames.

BBC North West occasionally use a plain BBC TWO ident for North Westminster although Close Up North always has BBC TWO North West.
Does anyone have real media files of the English regional progs (documentary & Parli/Current Affairs) they could post on the forum or direct me to?

Gareth
PS Whilst looking on the BBC Jobs page on Ceefax (1) they are advertising for staff for a New BBC ONE English regional documentary presenters based at Newcastle, Nottingham and Bristol

Yeah, I've caught the odd edition of the programme - nice little current affairs drawing each week where viewers can email in a caption for at the end of the programme! Usually a link up interview with Tunbridge Wells and a caption at the end promoting the two programmes (standard South on Sunday background with large South Today still and smaller South East Today still on it).

A quick check frame by frame reveals the BBC TWO logo is actually flipped at the same time/angle and not faded on afterwards.

Cheers, Asa

The West and East Midlands' Sunday programme relaunched a while back now and is now known as 'View Point Midlands'

Like South on Sunday, it has a much less political orientated theme to it and is much more current affairs and what's happening now. (Hence current) Wink

I know I'm always quick to judge Pebble Mill and their productions but credit where it's due...

After watching today's View Point Midlands about drugs and the decriminalisation of them I must say I was VERY impressed. They had 5 studio guests and a live link up to Shropshire. Not to forget the usual contact points available and John Hess rounding up the various calls, txts and emails.

Michael Collie presented this weeks and he was fantastic at it! He did a really good job and kept the programme together well!

Also the production of the programme in general seems a lot better than Midlands Today. Sound is clear, graphics and titles are clear and sharp and the cameras seemed to give a very good image - I think they may have made changes to them in some way.

The studio is also done up very nicely and is lit in an orange way but not overdone...the lighting is MUCH better than Midlands Today in which it is all over the place! No desk is rather nice...somehow makes the studio feel that little bit more spacious than it looks normally.

Finally...I noticed the usual yellow alcoves were red like the national studio. Having not seen View Point Midlands for a while...I can't say whether this is an actual change or a clever trick with the lighting. Looked very nice whichever it was. Maybe it'll get used on Midlands Today soon.

Anyway, overall - it was a very impressive programme and the ideas and methods used in it gave a very good impression and it's the best regional programme I've seen come out of Pebble Mill for a good few years!

heres the start of today's viewpoint midlands - (real video file) - its not a bad programme really, it is in 4:3 which is nice, and they do a grand job using what must be a very tiny budget.

as you can see mike collie really gets stuck in (as hes standing in for pat burns), he really can chair a debate well, and is certainly one of pebble mill's most under used talents.  pat burns on the otherhand trys his best but IMO is more comfortable talking to the politicians, and i think the midlands at westminster should return as a monthly show - in addition to the weeky viewpoint mids.

the titles are poor, and the coffee table looks like its from a jumble sale - but the content of the programme is good, and im presuming an injectionof cash will come with the move to bbc one midlands.

i also think east midlands should be finally set free - they have served their 10 year sentence and i think it is finally time to let them go.  hopefully with the next wave of regions going onto sky digital and the move to bbc one, pebble mill will employ a telephonist to allow john hess to be a presenter, and we will see the creation of a completely seperate programme for the east.

having said all that, i've seen the south on sunday, and their titles were certainly no better - although newcastle seem to have the nicest with their NOW titles (they were nice the last time i saw them anyway)

those red alcoves appeared a few weeks ago and look very red, so i dont think it is lighting trick, but during midlands today the yellow ones return.  the red alcoves are a replacement for the orange picture motages they used to use - but the set is always changing, depending upon the amount of guests, they some times use the midlands today desk, a smaller desk sideways on, or no desk at all.

Yep - looks like Tunbridge Wells are opting in to a dirty feed of Southampton BBC Two, and opting a little early (so they get a burst of the BBC South ident after their BBC South East ident) If the show is live I guess this is a result of the ident going through the main Southampton gallery - difficult to justify running the presentation gallery as well...

I watched (& taped) the cycling edition from a few weeks ago.

I thought they used the same studio that they use for Midlands Today, because isn't there a big screen on the set, like MT, or is my memory cheating, because I only watched it once live so far, so I must watch it again at some point !!!

they do use the MT studio - they just change the lighting, furniture, alcoves and window image.

the seating depends on guest numbers and the window image changes each week depending on the subject.

North Westminster (BBC North West) I think is a good programme, it usually has about 4/5 studio guests and is presented by Jim Hancock from the North West Tonight soft set using the standard English regional soft chairs around a table that looks like it's made of unfinished MDF in two tones. The 'windows' are replaced by North Westminster logos.

This happens in Wales all the time.  The network programme comes from London, with separate CAs from London and Cardiff - Often the BBC1 Wales ident cuts slightly before the BBC1 ident does to the programme.  So the balloon rising up Snowdonia suddenly zooms to floating past Needles for a second before the programme starts.  On the other hand, Wales is sometimes shoved into Eastenders a few drumbeats in, because they're a bit slow.  There is a second or so delay between London and Cardiff, so this is mostly unnoticed.

On the *very* few occasions that Big Brother was ever shown LIVE on S4C as well as C4, it showed the C4 half-screen 'next' caption and announcer before the Welsh announcer interrupted with something like, 'Well actually, S4C won't be showing anything remotely as exciting as that, instead...'

Your dually-transmitted programme clearly comes from Southampton, and BBC South have the controls - with South East keeping in sync with them.
