Can anyone tell me information about the encrypted service called BBC Select? It used to be broadcast on BBC Two overnight, (where the Learning Zone now is), and could only be recieved by the use of special decoder boxes. If anyone has any more info on this or, even better, has any screenshots or soundbites, I'd be very grateful.

Yeah I remember that! I know it was around in 1992 because I specifically remember them promoting around the time of the General Election. You needed a 'BBC Selector' to receive the programmes and was specially designed for nurses and people who have different hours.
I think I might have the trailer on tape that was promoting it, with those 2 dogs. If I find the tape out, I'll encode it and post it on the web.

I remember seeing this a few times when I was always up early (probably because I couldn't sleep), the encryption was a lot like the encryption on Sky Analogue.

I distinctly remember the logo - A gold ring with BBC SELECT written underneath, and accompanied by the same music each time. But I always thought that it was on BBC 1, not BBC 2 - all I ever remember seeing of BBC Select was the logo with music - one time I saw it and it was on for about 20 minutes (or it seemed like it).

Apparantely now the BBC's security department is called BBC Select (or so my friend who works @ BBC Wales says.

Yeah I thought it was on BBC ONE.

Ah, the days before it joined News 24 and you could hear the announcer say goodnight, followed by the national anthem Smile

They should still say goodnight and play the national anthem and say something like 'In a moment we join BBC News 24, we'll be back at 6:00 for Breakfast but from all of us here at BBC ONE for now, goodnight' then the national anthem then a swift entrance into News 24. Now what would be wrong with that?

It would seem like a closedown. Any viewers that spill over from BBC One to N24 is a good thing (inc. digital uptake etc..) and reduces the idea of viewers channel-hopping in an ever-increasing world of channels.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/thenandnow/history/tester.htm - it launched 21 January 1992 (also 'BBC Subscription Television' started 1/1/1990 - hmmm, interesting).
