The set in Bristol has been refreshed/redeveloped/extended every couple of years anyway... and could easily be again to a higher spec' if required to look good in HD. I still don't see what that has do with Bristol not being a suitable place to shoot in HD.

I rather suspect Casualty will have a HD filmic look when it returns in September...nothing like listening to viewers and learning from past mistakes, is there?

They haven't done anything yet and you're already berating them?

Can't you see it coming though? Holby City went filmic in July and it's obvious Casualty will follow, if only to avoid artistic distance between two shows apparently set in the same hospital.

Going HD is one thing, but as anyone who has seen the in-store demos in any major retailer will know, going filmic with it is not essential.

I'm sure that any decision about a filmic style will be a creative one, given the stark difference to the 'immediacy' of video.

Television people don't always make the best decision, of course, but you should at least wait to see what they come up with before you go for the jugular.

Sometimes, though, their thought processes are all too predictable.

Personally I would like to see both Casualty and Holby produced on the same site (to enable greater crossover), both going back to series format to preserve storyline quality and the bed-hopping removed to take Casualty back to its roots as a political study of all that is wrong with the NHS. Holby City should do likewise albeit in other areas of the hospital. Alas, I can predict with almost the same certainty this isn't going to happen.

There seems to be an assumption that the BBC does things out of careful planning and logic.

If that were the case they would not have relocated the Birmingham operation to a building which is not fit for purpose.

Not appeased the Government fetish for all things Manchester.

Not sold everything and anything that is not fastened down.

Not allowed private contractors to provide playout and facilities management.

Not be determined to dispose of TV centre which has suffered from an inferior privatised maintenance contract.

Not entered into a massive disasterous PFI project for Broadcasting House for which we will be paying for years.

Not allowed themselves to be manouvered into a position where the government controlled watchdog OFCOM has ANY influence over a supposedly independant corporation which is owned by everyone in this country.

The BBC in its current form is very much the broken animal that the government wanted after Hutton. Something that the Tories tried for years, but failed to achieve. Although of course, some things such as the sale of BBC Broadcast were initiated long before anyone could have imagined Andrew Gilligan would open a right can of worms.

Spot on about Ofcom - it IS a government puppet, pure and simple. Why do you think the jumk food ad ban was so quick in its implementation?

If they're going HD, I very much doubt they'll go 'filmic'.

HD shot material down-converted to SD usually looks much better than that which is SD shot

They went 'filmic' with Holby City though and that doesn't look better at all.

Just thinking about the still-vacant and now without-a-future bonded warehouse at granada studios - wouldn't this make a good site for Eastenders? Could create a bit of a centre for soap production.

I missed the latest developments on the Bonded Warehouse story... have Granada decided not to move out of Quay Street and go next door then? Or is it much worse, in that they've decided to close the whole lot?
