Thinking about it, would it do TVC any good for Eastenders to relocate there and build an exterior set somewhere left vacant on the grounds? They couldn't complain of it not been utilised then could they! Wink

Nice idea, but there's really no room on the TVC site for the outdoors Eastenders set unless you started demolishing significantly large parts of the building.

Is it really that big? TVC seems like a small town at times...

Try having a looking at TVC on google Earth. You'll see theres nothing left at the site to build on.

And yet they want to sell it off because so much of it is vacant. See my point? Rolling Eyes

Another option I suppose just up the road - Elstree film studios. Wait until Big Brother buggers off (at last) and build the exterior there Smile

I thought they wanted to sell it off as its a bit erm aged and getting past it now. I cant really imagine it being in "tip top" condition now.

Whereabouts is TC4 on the map? Just thinking of something someone said about Blue Peter liking that particular one because it opens up onto a stretch of road. I know it's quite near the Blue Peter Garden but from a bird's eye p.o.v it's quite hard to tell.

Ah, MediaGuardian is saying the moves are because of technical reasons rather than cost-cutting like I suspected. Which makes sense, Casualty in HD from Bristol would be a joke and apparently the 22yr old Elstree base would struggle to cope with five episodes a week.

Why would Casualty in HD from Bristol be a joke? Surely Casualty is a single camera / 4 waller shoot (rather than a multi camera studio shoot). New HD camera equipment and an edit suite upgrade would cost no more there than anywhere else surely?

And r.e. Elstree; if it is as disused as they say, why not move Casualty up there to fill the space. As for EastEnders not coping with 5 episodes per week production... surely they'd be better cutting back the number of episode and concentrating on improving the quality.

The set is held together by sticky tape and this would show up on HD. Although I suppose the Beeb could argue it is a valid critiique of the NHS..

It is certainly true that Elstree under the BBC isn't as busy as it once was. In the beginning there was Grange Hill and EastEnders (the latter being the reason for the BBC's purchase), then it was home to Allo Allo, Top Of The Pops and more, and until 2000 the unit formerly known as "International Recordings" which provided BBC1 and BBC2 with Ceefax music. One by one they were all axed or decamped until it was just EastEnders and Holby City left.

The other major loss for Elstree was BBC South East which left for Marylebone (and became BBC London) in 2001.

At one time that part of the building and one of the large studios was planned to be the home of Channel 5, but it never happened

Just one thing - if Elstree shut where would Holby go? To Wales?

According to the original article, wasn't PInewood suggested? Certainly studios such as Elstree Film Studios, Shepperton and Pinewood are all struggling a bit. A long term client like Holby or EastEnders would help a lot (and save the BBC a bit of cash)

Do you think it'd fit into Elstree Film Studios Inspector? It is a good site, and will certainly be bigger when Big Brother moves out, but compared to Pinewood it's not exactly vast...

It would be the most convienient move I suppose though.
