BBC Regional News Problems

Does anyone know what would happen if, for example, after the National News, a regional news programme (i.e. Look North) was unable to broadcast for some reason?

Would we be treated to UK Today or another region's news programme?

Kind regards,

Dan

Hi Dan.

Until 1999 (I think), it would have been Newsroom South-East. That was the emergency feed.

Now, it's UK Today with a generic announcement beforehand 'And now on BBC One, I'm sorry but we can't show your regional programme. Instead news from around the UK today.'

But what happens when all the regions go on Sky digital? Surely UK Today will be stopped and Newsroom South-East becomes the sustaining feed once again?

Cheers, Asa

You would indeed be treated to the delights of UK Today

That would make sense, thanks you both!

One other thing I neglected to ask: are the regional programmes overlaid on top of UK Today?

Occasionally I have seen the first couple of seconds of the UK Today titles before Look North is brought in (somewhat late).

(Asa: very nice site, looking forward to the update Wink )

Regards,

Dan

What is delightful about UK Today, it's crapper then the regional programmes.

Harshy I was being sarcastic.

In reply to Daniel, UK Today is put out on the main transmission feed from London. Each region should switch to their own programme when they hear the director in London tell them to opt out. If they are a bit slow on the button then you will see a few seconds of UK Today

UK Today takes about 2 seconds longer to opt out and always opts back slightly earlier.

Last year one Sunday we didn't get the BBC North Sunday teamtime bulletin, we got North West Tonight instead.

I've also heard that in the days of the 9.28 bulletin BBC North West showed BBC the North bulletin instead. Ian White even said hello to viewers in the North West.

So maybe this shows a reluctance within the BBC North regions to show UK Today - I don't blame them either!

I know that in the North if either Manchester or Leeds can't get on the air (I think it was a fire alarm the last time) they tend to get the feeds switched so they get the other output (the feeling being North news is better than generic UK Today news). But normally regions get UK Today if they fail to opt .. I know I went out in Scotland at 0858 the other morning when Scotland failed to opt for some reason.

Yes, I remember the time we got Look North here in the North West. I agree with that - why should we get south rubbish when we live 200 miles away? I hope this happens again soon so I can capture it! Mind you we get blasted UK Today now (no offence Nicky!)
