Up here in Scotland, before the next programme begins on BBC 1 all day long, BBC 1 Scotland is shown and announced in continuity. Presumably the same in Wales and Northern Ireland.
But in England, is it true that even if you live in BBC North East Of England region or any other region in England, that the region is only shown and announced in continuity just before the weekday national news bulletins and regional news magazines.
I find it difficult to understand why there has never been a continuity announcer shown on the BBC before programmes just like ITV successfully did for many years.
I could be completey wrong but I dont recall ever seeing a 'whats coming up caption' for our region. We either get a clip of an upcoming programme in our region, for me normally it's Metropoll, or we get an announcement of whats still to come this evening which is broadcasted to all English regions.
BBC Scotland, BBC Wales and BBC Northern Ireland all have continuity departments but AFAIK (and I may be wrong) BBC Wales is the only one to cover every junction from morning til closedown on BBC1 and BBC2.
It would not be cost effective to have local announcers in every region and as I'm sure viewers in the 'nations' will vouch for how naff it can look sometimes as at the moment they opt in and out of the main BBC1/2 and if they say fade a balloon into EastEnders the regions have to wait until it's gone before opting in.
The only time there is local continuity is before the BBC1 News programmes and on BBC2 for local documentary strands, parliament programmes and odd specials or Rugby League in the North. A lot of those are on tape/digital format. But I do remember doing continuity on BBC 2 South West into one of the documentary strands .... a highlight in my career!!!

I didn't know that!
I've never ever seen a London announcer on BBC Wales, except during the deaf zone at 3.00am

I am almost 100% sure BBC Scotland do the same apart from any mistakes when we got the London CA instead, certainly we never get the BBC ONE Logo its always the scottish BBC ONE Scotland one with the scottish idents

I think BBC One should just be BBC ONE nationwide, across NI, Scotland and Wales.
It must cost a fortune to run and employ people in 3 other regions to read the same script for a junction. Perhaps then Mr Dyke will put biscuits back on the table
BBC Scotland, BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Wales have much more schedual changes than the Local English regions for example the changes to BBC ONE Scotland from BBC ONE today were.

*Also tonight just before Eastenders we got a promo for a BBC ONE Scotland Programe then a network C/A with the balloon over London. (That was on Sky Digital anyway. Not sure about analogue)
I also remember for 2 or 3 years before the change to the present BBC One idents in 1997 in Scotland, the station was named BBC Scotland On 1. BBC 2 in Scotland was the same as well.
Can anybody back me on that.

I certainly remember going to Wales in the early 90s and being infuriated by the continual references to 'BBC Wales on 1' and 'BBC Wales on 2'. So no doubt Scotland was the same.
By the way, in the South East we didn't even get a globe that said 'BBC1 South East' on it until 1985! Before that it was always the network one, even before regional programmes.
(and I may be wrong) BBC Wales is the only one to cover every junction from morning til closedown on BBC1 and BBC2.

And what happens when there is a transmiter problem and viewers in a certain area might be experiencing problems, so someone from London is going to put out a message across the whole of the UK and Ireland apologising for interference that some viewers around Central Scotland or the Highlands may be experienceing
And from 1985-2001 we even got a BBC Two regional ident!

i think the bbc should either increase local continuity in england or decrease local continuity in the nations - make it fairer.
if i were in a position of authority at the bbc i would
either
implement semi regional continuity (eg bbc west mids & east mids, bbc south west & west) at all times - except before regional shows - on both bbc1 and 2
down-grade bbc continuity in the nations to regional status
label the network service as |B|B|C|ONE England rather than just |B|B|C|ONE - same for bbc 2
i have nothing against the scots/welsh etc - i just think that england are short changed - take the example of 'semi regional continuity' - if adopted by the west mids and east mids region - it would serve a combined population of more than scotland an wales put together (thats a fact)
