This April sees the next step in Red Button evolution – the Connected Red Button gets a new name, Red Button+, and this will become the primary experience when you press Red on a wide range of internet connected TVs.

Why now? The last few years has seen incredible growth in the number of internet connected TVs sold in the UK, and viewers using the internet connection to receive a wide range of content on offer - from movies on demand to content applications. Since the original launch, the BBC have been busy testing and enabling the Red Button+ service to be available on more devices, including Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and services from EE and YouView – as well as maintaining the Tivo service.

Well, an interesting development.

This has gone in to beta on some devices - I've been using it on my Huawei YouView box and it's a pretty nice application - you can customise the weather to show your local town, the News section has lots of video (in the same format as the Smart TV apps), and everything is fully integrated with iPlayer.

Just hope some older smart TVs aren't left in limbo - I've got all the BBC apps and the basic connected menu (in the style of the text menu), but despite being just over a year old my Samsung isn't on the list of ones to receive it.

Along kind of the same lines but not "All 4" officially launches on Monday - I'm guessing that's just going to be available via the Smart TV apps rather than them linking it to their channels.
