Will the BBC rebrand for the big move to BH?

I've read somewhere else here that BBC One is to be rebranded in 2008 (though I can't imagine them sticking with the dancers that long), and this is roughly the date when News, World Service and Radio 1 move back into Broadcasting House.

So, will the BBC ditch the |B||B||C| and go for a complete rebrand in 2008?

I'd have thought BBC News would want to rebrand at the same time they relocate (though I like the idea of the current News 24 countdown ending with the red data stream tearing up Regent Street, dodging round All Saints and ending straight in the newsroom of the new BH!) but on some of the mock-ups they do seem to have china red on the newsroom walls!?

I'd have thought if they were going for a complete corporate rebrand they would have started planning it now.

I doubt they will drop the three squares. They are such a strong symbol and logo, that in my opinion, they would be stupid if they did. The current logo is versatile, distinctive, and I think, timeless - it could go on forever, and should remain the BBC's logo as long as possible. I don't think there is any need for a change.

As for BBC News, I think red has been very much established nationally and internationally as the "BBC" colour. I think the red's going to stay for the forseeable future.

If the architects have designed models, one might conclude they are working to the existing brand with no insight as to a future look. They would of course only be cosmetic changes so would be less important in the larger scheme.

I don't think the BBC logo in its current form should change any time soon; and let's face it kids - 2008 is soon!

I also think the current BBC logo is a design classic for so many contradictory reasons. I only regret the fact that the way it was used on screen so tightly and stylishly in the 1997 relaunch has become so diluted.

[lux-ton] I'd love to see BBC1 rebrand - almost 3.5 years on, I'm still incensed they got rid of the balloons. [/lux-ton]

I think the present BBC logo is fine in itself, but it was extremely badly implemented in 1997. The old BBC logo had been allowed to be fit in with it's surroundings, i.e. officially it was opaque with light grey boxes, white letters, and red, green and blue coloured underlinings, but BBC South West made it transparent and glassy to fit in with the Spotlight logo, BBC Sport coloured in the letters to make them fit in with their presentation better, the colours could be removed from the underlines if they were inappropriate etc etc. And that's without getting into the number of times some sort of 3D effect was added to it even though officially it was a 2D logo.

Yet when the new logo was introduced it was done so with unnecessarily anal implementation rules which dictated that it must be either be 100% white opaque boxes and 100% black opaque letters, or 100% black opaque boxes and 100% white opaque letters, and the way it was just plastered postage stamp style onto presentation which had previously incorporated the old logo in a more suitable way made it look awful.

The calls that it was old fashioned and unsuitable at the time of it's introduction were not in any way misplaced imo - you can't introduce something as plain and simple as the logo is and then tie it to such rigid implementation rules and expect it to fit in well - especially considering that it was 1997 and flashy, colourful, 3D imagery was the norm.

Fortunately, they've now realised that insisting on it being pure white and black and as flat as a piece of paper all the time with no room for maneouvre wasn't a good idea and have now loosened up a bit. I can now see it continuing for the forseeable future.

It doesn't take that long to design something like that and walls can be painted! Any architect designs are just ideas of what the plade could look like, they've got to be a colour so why not the colour that is used now. After the place has been built and fitted out... they'll start to think about interior decoration

There's no way they would change the current logo, especially not because a couple of departments had moved buildings. As for news, they've got a good few years before they move (the old buildings that are on the site haven't even been demolished yet!) - I doubt they'll still be using the same graphics then as they are now..... after all they aren't using the same ones as they were 5 years ago.

Oh and Radio 1 isn't moving back to Broadcasting House, in fact it hasn't been there since the early 1970's .

I would also love to see that as the end to the countdown. The walls in all the mocks I have seen of BH involve no decoration so one wuld expect they would simply start painting red panels on the wall and shoving up some of those pilars of lights and red circles they have in the News 24 and World sets.

So long as the concept is "fabulous beyond words" I shall be happy.

Radio 1 IS moving back. It used to come from there - admittedly ages and ages ago, and will be moving back as all BBC Radio is to come from the complex.

Radio 2 and 6Music will still be coming from next door in Western House. Five Live may be from Manchester by then and remember the other national network BBC Asian Network already is based in Leicester.

I hope the new news studio will have a real newsroom background, and will have a colour scheme similar to the 99-03 studio.
