Would it be the case now that anyone with the right passwords would be able to dial in remotely from any location to be able to control the playout system in the case of an evacuation? I know from experience, this is very common in radio these days where programme controllers can control what goes out on air from their bedroom at home.

It's possible, I don't know if it's something that they or any major TV station has though.

AIUI (Which is very limited understanding) the Pro-Bel they use in White City has a web interface which you can log in and move things about on the automation system. Don't hold me to that though.

You'd be surprised... Far better than a set-top box under the telly - if you have it properly networked to your main Media Center PC.

It's absolutely possible, although I'd imagine that running a TV channel remotely would be a bit hairy and not something you'd want to do for anything important. You probably wouldn't have any monitoring except what you can see off air... and that's too late especially if there's a significant satellite/digital delay.

Red Bee don't use Pro-Bel, at least not for the BBC channels.

I believe that there were lots of radio station staff and engineers on their computers in the early hours of the morning on 31/09/1997, dialling into their automation and hurriedly changing playlists and news durations!

Well, in the case of the person I was thinking of, it's his spare bedroom. Hope that allays any concerns. Laughing

Right you are. I was told they did by an unreliable source anyway.

Red Bee's predecessor department BBC Presentation did use varous versions of Pro-Bel's automation system for BBC domestic and UKTV channels however. Maybe this is where the confusion arose...
