Or better still, get a DAB receiver for your car or home stereos.

The sound quality of broadcasts is exceptional. All radio stations are broadcast in digital 'CD style' quality.

Must be listened to to be believed.

Yeah, thanks for the info, n' all, Ian, but did you have to:

a) Provide a huge screenshot of a simple radio channel

and

b) Waste Asa's f2s storage space while doing so?

Yes, I got one last week - the world's first portable DAB set - and it's fab! Don't believe all the whingers who say the sound quality is poor - it sounds perfectly fine to me, certainly superior to FM, although 'CD quality' is perhaps stretching it a bit.

Perhaps Mark doesn't have the proper facilities to get a sparkling small image - this is the best I can get.

I hope this cheers you up Mr V:-

I wouldn't go that far ...

I've had DAB for about 2 months, and it's not quite as good as FM - that's for sure. Especially some of the channels that are compressed to 128 k/b streams (pretty much the same as an MP3 at that rate)

BUT ... the choice of stations is fantastic. Particularly look out for The Storm - good station Smile

And, Five Live Sports Extra has been going for ages as a test station Smile

Maybe I'm not an audiophile, but 128kbps, 160kbps, 192kbps all sound the same to me.  It's probably true that DAB sounds no better than FM - if you've using a high quality set-up and an external aerial.  But I'm used to listening to FM on a portable radio with a rod aerial; and the slight background hiss that, for me, was ever present on FM stereo is absent from DAB.  To get a crystal clear sound on a portable radio is a revelation.

And yes, the choice - I counted 43 stations that I can pick up, but I'm still really looking forward the arrival of BBC Six Music...

Have had a DAB receiver in my car for 15 months and bought one recently for my home.

Don't listen to FM or AM anymore, cos the stations (especially the AM ones) sound so much better on DAB.

However, receivers are still a bit on the pricy side so it may take a while to catch on.

Also, text service provided by each station is very useful if you want to know what track is playing at any one moment in time.

5 Live Sports Extra uses their text service to provide football scores from other games, whilst their commentary match is in progress.

Think most stations could utilise the text service better though to provide updated traffic reports.

I've been monitoring what text each station is using - the BBC stations mainly give a generic description of the programme, while many of the commercial stations manage a little better tell you what song you're listening to - the only BBC show to do this was the UK Top 40. But the wooden spoon goes to BBC London with the constantly repeating message 'On radio, on TV, online'. More effort please!

And yes, I don't think there are too many people out there who will happily spend Ł500 on a portable digital radio! Prices need to come down, and there needs to be a lot more promotion - after all, hardly anyone seems to know about the existence of DAB!
