Radio 2 and 6 Music have also started doing the same; presumably only Radio 1 and 1Xtra are immune.

Radio 1 and 1Xtra do their news "in house" - the BBC Radio News department supply the news to Radio 2, 3, 4, 5 Live and 6 Music. Judging by this source - MediaGuardian - I imagine they've started calling themselves "BBC News" on air to put pressure on Mark Thomson not to cut their budget!!

New brand of BBC news
Monkey had always wondered who provides the news for the BBC's radio networks. It turns out it's the BBC! In the most superfluous rebranding of all time, BBC newsreaders have been instructed to announce "BBC News" at the beginning and end of its radio news bulletins, including Today. So instead of "BBC Radio 4 News" it is now "BBC News for Radio 4". It's all about branding and "strengthening the identity of BBC News", see? Listeners were unimpressed and besieged the corporation with complaints. But word has it the trend could shift to TV. Forget about BBC News 24. What price plain old BBC News?

So this confirming the rumours that News 24 will become just BBC News?

Well, It sounds like the idea was essentially to rearrage the words so that "BBC" and "News" are right next to each other, rather than seperated by the "Radio X" bit.

Given the fact that in the name "BBC News 24", the two words are already together, there is absolutely no logic to Media Guardian's (or anyone else's) supposition that the radio changes might indicate a scrapping of BBC News 24's, er, "24" bit Rolling Eyes

Yes, News 24 may indeed scrap the "24" bit at some point in the future. Who knows. It's no more or less likely than a million other suppositions that one could make. All I'm saying is that one couldn't possibly reach that conclusion on the basis of the radio changes.

So, as Inspector Sands says, this doesn't confirm anything re: News 24, FFS! Confused

What an utterly ridiculous guideline!

I know News 24 discussion is for the Newsroom, but I personally don't think scrapping the "24" will be a good idea. Saying "BBC News 24" sounds IMO more impressive than just 'BBC News".

BBC News is the brand of all the BBC's news bits and bobs.

BBC News 24 is a sub-brand for a digital channel.

Why cut off the 24? How the hell could you think that BBC News 24 is provided by somebody other than BBC News?

No. The most ridiculous sub-brand would be 'BBC News on BBC News 24'.

Anyway, the 24 identifies the channel as being 'the channel'. If it was renamed to simply BBC News, it could refer to anything produced by BBC News and Current Affairs - even Newsbeat.

Not sure if the new look Word Service has been mentioned elsewhere? It's gone down the 'BBC Radio' route too. If they were going to do that, they could have used a circle somehow - a globe? I don't really see the point in the change, especially as it's still out of keeping with the main UK stations. Hopefully something will be done about the dated regional looks.
