And judging by Peter's announcement, the logo was meant to be Radio 6 Music - not Five Live!

Yep, bit of a slip up there.
With the increase of IPPs and ECPs, it seems people aren't getting the time to do simple checks.
Hollyoaks had got to the final scene with a black ECP coming up a couple of times - I assume an IPP is meant to appear instead and yesterday Fonejacker was advertised with the announcer correctly saying "tomrrrow night" but with the caption of "tonight". And no, I'm not even paying that much attention to what I'm watching!

Exactly. Normally tweaking a logo wouldn't have such a bad effect, but when said logo is so simple, even adding a triangle can ruin it.

Moyles was talking about the new logos this morning, in particular commented on the bit in Ariel about the Radio 1 logo - saying that it was working well so they just tweaked it. So why tweak it if it was working well? Listen again around 7.50ish.

Designs and branding changed for change's sake. It happens a lot - perhaps a bit too much in the case of on-screen branding. IMO, more often than not it just doesn't work out ideally.
Creative folks just need to know when they've reached a solid idea, and not be tempted to tweak it that bit further and potentially spoil things, but I guess that is what's happened with R1.

I'd like to say that's near true but you can't say you're any bit of a pro creative until you get told to do something that's completely unnecessary or even a "that but different".

Well, at least they got the right logo (for the right channel!) here: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24111&start=648
Although if they're going to use it in a box, they really need to do a version with "BBC RADIO" on one line above the "(5)live" so they can make it a decent size. And probably invert the colours so that it's white-on-turquoise, as on their website.
