BBC Radio

Much as I dislike having threads about radio on what is primarily a TV site (despite my active participation in them when they appear!) , I feel this question would best be answered here.

I saw the following image on Radio 1 Online today.

Look carefully at the logo - is that a new style being introduced? Somebody said in the BBC Three thread last week that Andy Parfitt wanted a new logo for the station. If this is it, then I hate it. It's pointless for obvious reasons. And they don't need a new logo.

Or is it, on the other hand just something for that image?

They added a triangle, whats the point in that.

I guess it makes the logo look more like the 1Xtra logo, which has a serif on the 1:

However, if they added a rectangle to the bottom of the 1, it would look almost like the classic 1977-1990 Radio 1 logo:

I had heard rumors about them changing the logo, so it's quite possible that is the new logo.

Radio 3's new logo is quite nice, however the new 5 Live logo is awful.

I assume all the logos are now plain and clear so they can be easily used across all media - you can see those working on mobile phones etc - bold and clear, rather than some of the old ones.

The only one I like (shockingly) is the new Radio 1 logo although I do admit that the tweaking does seem rather pointless. All the others look dreadful and very Microsoft Paintish. I'm sure even the jamesh's of this forum could have mocked up something more imaginitive. And I'm so disappointed they're getting rid of Radio 2's lovely neon 2s.

Are 6 Music and BBC7 also getting a revamp? (hopefully BBC7 won't be binning their clever logo as well)

The digital-only stations were renamed on DAB recently - 'BBC 6 Music' to 'BBC Radio 6 Music', '1Xtra - BBC' to 'BBC Radio 1Xtra' and 'BBC 7' to 'BBC Radio 7' - so perhaps this is all linked in together?

The Radio 2 one is rubbish. It's just a standard number 2!

The Five Live one is strange as they haven't used a number 5 for ages

I've often thought that those three stations needed the word 'Radio' in them, as that seems to be the policy elswhere to distinguish between BBC telly and BBC radio (i.e. Radios 1-5 already have the word 'Radio' in them; BBC telly channels are just 'BBC [Number]')

But, in the case of Radio 6 for not dropping the word 'music'. It seems too disjointed a name now IMHO.

5 is good.3 is bad.
