Appalled to see that the national anthem was not typed at the beginning of the report. Yet more blatant anti-British behaviour from the BBC.

Why was BBC Scotland channel created in the first place? Was it pressure from Scottish Parliament to have the BBC provide a unique dedicated Scottish channel?

Government policies in a lot of areas (inc. Health, Education, Policing, Justice, Transport (most of it), Environment, Housing, Local Government, Farming, Forestry, Fisheries, Culture, Tourism and some taxation and benefits) are devolved and it used to annoy Scottish politicians (of all colours) very much that this distinction was often not made clear to viewers.

Network bulletins would talk about “the government” when referring to England & Wales only things, and maybe mention important initiatives seen as flagship up here later in their bulletins. This led to calls for a Scottish Six o’clock news on BBC One. This came up again and again over many years.

At one point, the Scottish Government even set up its own commission to investigate broadcasting in general to determine if there was any ‘unfairness’ going on in coverage.

In recent times, demands for a Scottish Six have rescinded and network bulletins are much, much better at explaining what policies apply where. Many people still felt/feel Scotland wasn’t getting the coverage it deserved from the BBC. That was in part where the whole new channel came from – although personally I think it is far more than anyone in public life was really asking for or expected.

The BBC still gets accused of all sorts of political bias here as it does elsewhere in the UK, but I don’t think they can be accused of not providing enough space for coverage of Scottish news and current affairs.

There's updated BBC Radio logos in that article for Radio Ulster and Radio Foyle which I've never seen before. They aren't being used anywhere else that I can tell.

Sorry but it is this type of attitude and the attitude of the presenters towards that minister's flag which embodies the disconnect between Auntie and much of the general public.

I love Auntie and it's this sort of Emily Thornberry(?) sneering which endangers it.

It is also not a very funny joke.

If you are going to come across to TVLF, would you mind making these puerile digs on Twitter instead of the rest of us having to put up with it?

Thanks in advance.

I'll pretend to know who Emily Thornbury is and decline the offer to even bother acknowledging the existence of twitter but on a more serious note apologise for my post if it has caused frustration..

cmthwtv, I'm sorry if what I said came across harshly. I regret my tone and I apologise to you.

There are tens of millions of us of all races, backgrounds, and histories on this little island who love Britain and respect the flag. We, and I include myself in this, love the BBC and will forgive it virtually anything.

There are also tens of millions who love Britain and who don't think of themselves as racist, misogynistic gammon who hate the BBC because, rightly or wrongly (and I believe wrongly), it feels to them that the BBC is ashamed of being British and that people who work for the BBC think that the flag only belongs to the BNP and it is something to be embarrassed about.

The problem is that the second group is getting bigger, louder, and more influential. To get them on our side, we need to feel that the BBC caters for them and respects them too because they certainly don't at the moment.

The flag thing on BBC Breakfast was a skirmish in the so-called culture war we are apparently in but the more we give the anti-BBC lobby ammunition, they more they'll use it.

You might strongly dislike what the other people stand for but it's their BBC just as much as it's yours and they need to fall in love with Auntie again.

Sneering at them for loving the country they live in and the flag of that country might win a transitory argument on Twitter but it feeds the anti-Auntie monster.

And with that stunning hypocrisy for bringing politics into a thread, I apologise to all and I'll get my coat.

I took the post to be mocking of the story recently that a Tory MP had told the DG to use more flags in a report, not “gammons” etc.

I have just seen this on RTE News website, that BBC Four will be an archive only station - is this correct?

Yes. Which I believe has been hinted at for a while now?

They’ve basically slashed the budget for original programming.

Yes. In fact, the plan for BBC Two to become the main home of arts and culture instead of BBC Four was actually made in last year's annual plan, published in May 2020.
