I remain unconvinced that marketing is as much of a science as those involved in it would have us believe. I fear much of their time is spent creating pointless reports and graphs which justify their own existence.

In large organisations such as the BBC, it is not unusual for millions of pounds to be squandered on pointless bureaucracy and nonsense. This is a prime example. Marketing is not a science. Isn't it amazing how many people make money out of all this crap!?! All of this is just common sense.

If you set up your own company, would you hire people like this?? Damn sure you wouldn't. You wouldn't throw your money down the drain like that.

You're right, *I* wouldn't. But it begs the question, why DO companies continue to be brainwashed into spending all this money pointlessly?

Large institutions typically have a lot of cash at their disposal. If you or I had our own companies, this is undoubtedly a luxury that we would not have. Also, it would be OUR money and we would be a hell of a lot more careful with it. There are many parameters at work here that promote this type of pointless spending. But, in simple terms, when it's not your money, it's a hell of a lot easier to spend.

Coupled with this fact...

...an organisation such as the BBC has more managers than it does people that actually do the work. Managers have to be seen to be doing something - particularly when you have the government of the day breathing down your neck on certain issues. Now, where you have an issue such as a ratings dilemma, how do you impress your superiors? Well, by bringing in some independent waste of time quango of course. This way you can show all the resultant research, bar charts and graphs. Looks impressive.

The result: five extra viewers in Stornoway have tuned in to One Man And His Dog.

Well done Nigel, money well spent. £40k bonus for you and another company car.

The Points of View messageboard is not the general public. People who go to internet sites to discuss television are in a tiny minority.

the POV messageboard is a spoof, I'm convinced. There was a small error when the BBC moved the messageboard over from h2 to dna and they accused them to dumbing down.

Just per chance I annoyingly happened to be up and about at 5am this morning, switched on the tv whilst trying to convince our one year old it was still time to sleep and per chance found some nice soothing music being played on BBC2.
The only thing that I found rather boring was the fact the same 2 pieces of music were played over and over again for the hour it took to re- induce sleep however the monotony and boredom of it certainly had the desired effect.
My question is with all the thousands of pieces of music the BBC has at its disposal why is it necessary to play the same 2 pieces 4 times in an hour?
