They used the aston because we joined N24 in the middle of a report not, where it usually starts, at the begining of a report.

Hi - this is BBCChoice, but at college, so I can't log in (for some bizare reason to do with cookies).
Anyway, did anyone notice at 01.13 this morning BBC News 24 played the full length ident *AGAIN*!! Great!
What I would like to see, however, is BBC ONE Presentation running the Balloon ident for longer before fading into a full-length BBC News 24 ident - the Balloon is normally only shown for about 5 seconds, with a very rushed 'Through the night now...' speech.
I'm presuming that is because it is easier to link to the end of the next story that way?

You are slightly wrong! The aston will not have gone out on BBC World as they do not take ABC World News Tonight - they have different programmes in 'back half hours'. News 24 viewers will of actually seen this aston but it is technically possible to split who sees which astons ... we've done it before when promo'ing programmes only shown on News 24/BBC1 and not World. It's the same with things like the clock and DOG - World do not get those!

I presume the aston must have appeared on BBC News 24, because (AFAIK) it's just the one feed going to BBC ONE, News 24 and World. This means that BBC World viewers were welcomed too!!

Exactly, what people don't understand is that when BBC World takes a 5 hour feed out of BBC News 24, it actually only takes the news bulletins. On the BBC World end, there's always the regular 10 second countdown followed by the BBC World Ident ('News, 24 hours a day, this is BBC World') and then the ident usually stays onscreen for a few extra seconds as we wait for the News 24 countdown to finish. The first hint of News 24 we get is of the thunderclap right before the headlines (sometimes we do hear the last few seconds of the News 24 countdown though).
At the end of the bulletin, BBC World just breaks away and launches into regular World programming such as Autocar and Holiday, making you change channels immediately
