Timing issues on lunchtime opt? (May 2011)

BBC South East Today seemed to finish a minute early at lunchtime today and so after holding the final shot for slightly too long they broadcast the BBC News channel for 50 seconds or so.

I turned to BBC One London while BBC One South East were showing the BBC News Channel and they were still showing their regional programme. What happened in other regions? Was this just a BBC One South East problem? Anyone in the know like to take a guess at how this could happen?

The 50 seconds of BBC News was subtitled, even though I guess BBC South East were still opted out at that point.

No, sounds like they opted back - the News Channel is on the sustaining feed of BBC 1 in the regional news slots now, not BBC London. London also opts-out now, hence occasionally we see a brief snip of the News Channel at the beginning and end of their bulletins.

The timing issue was probably to do with the bulletin being later than planned. If you have a (for example) 4 minute bulletin all ready to go and they you only realise that it's meant to be 5 minutes when you've finished then it's tricky to fill that extra time. If the director had a trail or 2 handy they could have played them but they don't comfortably fill 50 seconds

What is the reason for London now opting? I assume if a region fails to opt that they would affectively crash out of the news channel when BBC1 returns to network output?

How come the other week a Midlands Today Sunday teatime bulletin was late starting & we got the first few seconds of BBC London, before swopping over & they even finished early too, getting the BBC London endboard as well as the MT one?

If the NC is supposed to be the sustaining feed, we shouldn't be seeing BBC London at all surely?

That is certainly what I saw today. BBC One left the BBC News Channel while Tony Blair was in mid-sentence to join Laura Tobin standing there for a second and waiting for the other regions to opt back.

Why do they use the BBC News Channel now? If London are opting out anyway. wouldn't a 'Programmes resume shortly' caption be better on the sustaining feed in all situations where it is accidentally shown? They could even re-word the BBC One HD slide and show it on SD too.

I believe the News Channel would, if they knew someone was broadcasting them because they hadn't opted, try and do a clean out into the weather (or whatever followed) but obviously they didn't know in this case.

For one region? I really hope that isn't the case.

I'm sure someone will be able to confirm it, but I'm pretty sure that the News Channel is the sustaining output for most, if not all of the opts. I think it changed in the run up to BBC1 HD, what do HD viewers get during the very short regional news slots?

Very unlikely I'd have thought, especially in a 5 minute bulletin. By the time the message had been communicated through to the editor/gallery it would be too late to rearrange it

The short bulletins just have the usual slide telling us our local news can be found on channel 1/101 and a countdown to normal programming resuming. For the headlines they usually take BBC News Channel.

I suspect London remain sustaining feed during Breakfast, as they go out on the NC.

They didn't cut the sound at the end of SET either as over the closing music you could hear Kaye's footsteps as she walked towards the desk, followed by her and Lynda talking, although I couldn't hear clearly what they were saying.
