4s music is ok and probably the best music out of all the terrestrial channel's idents. hardly ever watch five so cant give a fair judgement on theirs. TWO is in desperate need of a refresh

4's music is understated, and a perfect complement to their visually-striking idents. Five's music is too understated. BBC 2 generally is good, if a little tired now.

Red Bee has really gone bad at making idents. ITV have ditched them after only 8 months(or close to that) and now people are complaing about BBC ONE idents. They really need to get their house in order before companies start going off smoewhere else.

BBC2 and C4 have good music (the more recent C4 idents seem better in this respect IMO). Some of Five's idents have good music, others seem a a bit too generic or unmemorable.
BBC1's music isn't up to scratch if you consider what came before with the Dancers and Balloons, both having superior soundtracks IMO.
ITV1, was pretty poor with the emotions stuff, now the music is even worse with the same rather wimpy tune on every ident. So I'd say yes, there has been a decline in the quality of ident music compositions in recent years.
While each channel has had their own peak in this field, I think generally the mid 90's was a high point for ident music and it was very strong.

Absolutely. BBC ONE's was great at that point.

Technically, it was!...
...For the name 'BBC ONE' was used starting from the balloon era, which falls into mid-late 90's and is included within the period I highlighted.
The Laserdisc globe had no music, therefore it is quite silly to think I meant that.

Idents were simple back then wern't they. I liked them more, you didn't notice them so much and they were just there, and because they were simple you tended to focus more on the channel you were watching rather then a few guys flying kites, or dancing in the rain.
Channel 4 + BBC2 also don't really include people within their idents, whilst One, and ITV do... Some sort of pattern emerging?
