I think the idents should be focused around people, and what they do, such as recreation, seen as the BBC is "the people's" channel - we pay for it!

Have to disagree with that. Far too many channels in recent years seem to think it's a good idea to just film random shots of people doing, well, things (e.g. ITV1, UK Gold, five). OK, so it's cheaper, but it's not particularly memorable or recognisable.

Surely it's better to have a single symbol in order for each channel to be recognised (the BBC One globe, the 2, the 4, the Central Cake)? People could be involved, but they are worked around the symbol (think of the lifestyle idents for the BBC One balloon).

Then the thing that ties channels together is the logo itself. That way, each channel has an individual appearance and also fits in with the overall package.

I don't share that view; to me, footage of people doing things says nothing about a channel (despite what some people would have us believe).

It's not distinctive, and it is visually weak, unmemorable, and lacks impact, an attribute which many symbol-based idents had, such as the original Channel 4 blocks (bold and colourful, with the classic jingle) or BBC TWO's Blade ident (short, sharp, effective visuals and sound).

These are far more memorable, and I think that's also partly due to their simplicity; something missing from more recent branding.

This doesn't mean people should be excluded from idents full stop; as bee bee see mentioned with the BBC ONE Balloon, which included active people but kept the balloon, the constant recognizable symbol.

It should be a '1' and it would be a great idea to look at how the '1' that Lambie-Nairn designed in 1991 was developed over the years.

Red Bee Media wins BBC1 deal to rebrand on-air idents

Source: Design Week | Published: 16 March 2006 00:00

The BBC has appointed Red Bee Media to redesign its iconic screen idents for BBC1, following a pitch held among its rostered consultancies.

Red Bee Media, the consultancy that was formerly BBC Broadcast, will work up a revamped on-air look for the broadcaster, as the BBC moves towards rebranding BBC1. Lambie-Nairn, Wolff Olins, Attik and Red Bee Media are all believed to have gone head to head in a bid to win the prestigious commission (DW 29 September 2005).

Christine Madden, head of marketing at BBC1, confirms the appointment ahead of a formal announcement. 'This exciting work can now begin in earnest,' she says. The news comes as the BBC reportedly looks at reviewing its on-air screen design roster.

The existing screen idents, designed by Lambie-Nairn, were introduced in March 2002. They feature red branding, to match the channel's identity, and comprise a range of images, showing basketball players in wheelchairs, salsa dancers and a Bollywood-style dance routine.

The new idents are likely to include design concepts which can be applied across platforms as the BBC moves towards TV on-demand and downloading programmes to computers and mobile phones.

Peter Fincham, who joined the organisation as its controller last June, is overseeing the initiative to create the new on-air look.

Thanks for the article but I think it leaves more questions than answers! What is an "on-air screen design roster" and what does "include design concepts which can be applied across platforms" really mean?

A design roster is the list of companies that do the BBCs on-air design.

"design concepts which can be applied across platforms" - well just look at BBC2's website, that's the way things are going. They would need a design that can be carried over onto a website, VOD, Mobiles, BBCi and anything else that comes along

I'm not sure how likely it is that a numerical figure 1 will return, but I feel it would be effective, very clear and simple to use.

It can have its own style like the '2', which we have seen become like a bird for online clips and website promotions; BBC ONE currently has no scope for such an idea because the dancers are people; you can't do any clever animations/CGI sequences with it, and a bold figure would open up more possibilities, allowing greater creativity by far.

Quite frankly, I will be aghast if they use people as a focus again, particularly as it doesn't come across as the clearest identity to use if you're going to stick it on all sorts of formats!
