Basically cause UTV Live do, and seeing as UTV Live are the only ITV regional news bulitten to beat (by a long way) their BBC counterpart in the ratings, BBC Newsline have to try to out-do UTV Live at everything. This includes always referring to Newsline as "BBC Newsline"...

Do you meant beat at all or beat by a long way(the brackets seem to imply you mean beat at all)? North East tonight beats Look North (NE&C) in the ratings.

Its only 3 regions where ITV regional news in the early evening gets higher viewing figures than the BBC counterparts. As has been said, Northern Ireland, North East & Cumbria, and the Channel Islands.

so far I've only watched ... a bit of the weather on Wales Today, from a guy who looks drunk

How could you! [rare smiley usage > Shocked]
That's it, you're off the Christmas card list. Derek is a star of the silver screen, and brings *joining in* fun to the land of Wales, and now, beyond. You clearly were not watching properly -- Derek is a master creator of spending all day on something only to pretend to get it wrong. That takes a genius you know. Of which Dianne Oxberry can only dream.

Watch properly tomorrow, concentrate, and you'll realise that Derek is just drunk on meteorology and on fantastic news of regional onion festivals. No longer will you be lost for your Welsh cultural events. Indeed, Derek *is* his own cultural event.

I see what everyone means when they talk about that pile of crap River City. I'm sure the Scots would much more appreciate Holby.

No we bleedin wouldnt. Quite apart from the fact that we get Holby anyway on a Wednesday, River City is EXCELLENT. Lately it has been far superior to EastEnders.

It's filmic- that inferiorises it already (from both EE and Holby).

Doubt he could think of another word, though he shuold have said "Makes it inferior". I aggree with him though. I'm sure I read on here that River City was non-filmic, either I read wrong or they decided to start using it. Shame really, from what I saw it would have looked much beter if the filmic look was absent.

They did start using it quite a few months ago. I would have posted it but as A) its Scotland only (except for Sky and now NTL digital viewers) and B) it is not held in high regard, I didn't bother.

It really does look good though. Before anyone derides it or writes it off completely they might want to take a look at it first.

I wonder what will happen to the NTL feed outside Scotland when a programme is on, like the football, where the Beeb only have rights within the country?

Will it get blanked out a la satellite, I wonder, or will it be allowed to continue as the cable only supplies people within the UK?

I think it will need to be blanked out like satellite, as the BBC only have rights for SPL matches in Scotland, except for Old Firm matches. The UK-wide rights for SPL games are held by Setanta Sports.

I'll be very interested to see, as I SUSPECT that Setanta's rights are only for UK-wide SATELLITE.

Do you remember the early days of ITV on Astra, when Bernie had the UK-wide satellite rights to the Formula One and it was expected that although ITV could show it terrestrially anywhere in the UK, they weren't going to be allowed to simulcast on Astra until a LOT of negotiation took place?

I have a FEELING we're in a similar situation and that cable isn't included (or do I mean EXcluded) in Setanta's deal.

We'll have to see what happens.

I watched the first 20 or so minutes of the show and I really thought it looked out of place and it would have looked much better it it wasn't there.

They have never added it to EastEnders, I doubt they'd be able to get away with it, people weren't that happy about its use on the Ricky & Bianca and Dot's Story specials (looking at the EE message boards), and probabally explains why it was not there on the Perfectly Frank one. Obviously we all know what happened when Emmerdale started using it last year (And Casualty, but that was back in 1994, but is probabally is why it's never coe back & why Holby City doesn't use either), which probabally adds to why EE and Corrie won't touch it. I also think Doctors would look better without it, but I can't see them getting rid of it now (especially as it's a daytime soap few people see anyway).

It can look out of place if it is added to a programme that is lit and shot for video. The lighting style of River City has been changed to it lends itself more to the filmic look so the overall effect works well.

The other thing is that judgements after 20 mins dont really do justice to the crew/lighting designer/camera crew who work hard to make it good.
