People automatically think national anthem, time to turn off or over so it may have a negative effect no matter what announcement is made before. People don't always listen.

Here's a better version for those people who can't stand wrong aspect ratios and who'd generally like to have a better picture quality. Note that the pitch of the anthem is correct in this one, unlike in the one posted by deejay.

Off topic, but it's very unlikely that the next monarch will be called King Charles. Not only do previous King Charles's not have a great reputation but it also sounds like a dog! There's also the issue of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

He will probably be King George VII

He has postulated that he may call himself George, but he's certainly not decided - now there is a baby George on the books, he may decide against it. There's nothing stopping him choosing Charles IV to appease the admirers of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Looking at the middle names he has to choose from, I hope he goes for King Arthur!

Hmm, quite... slightly hostile comments on things I've posted seem to becoming more frequent...

I've no idea why mate, you generally post quality stuff and quality insights - some people are perhaps jealous Smile

Out of interest, did BBC One Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use God Save the Queen too?

Yes. So did regional stations in England when they did their own closedowns.

Of course, outside of marketing departments it's a perfectly reasonable response to turn off or over. That's really the point in close downs. I'm still not sure why we haven't seen Pages from bbc.co.uk to replace Pages from Ceefax yet.

Actually, BBC One Wales (or BBC Wales on One, as it was known back then) also played the Welsh national anthem alongside God Save The Queen at closedown. They played the Welsh anthem in its entirety and only played a part of GSTQ. There are a few clips on TV Ark proving this.

There are a few examples of English Regional closedowns on the internet from the era of ER Presentation in the late 70s/early 80s. There's one (fairly outrageous) clip from Pebble Mill, their last closedown it would seem, where the presenter (a certain Mr Alistair Yates) is quite open about why it's the last local closedown. There's also this very self indulgent example from Manchester (possibly from the same time):

Occasionally there have been later examples of regional programmes in the evening where a closedown has been done regionally, here's one from Newcastle in 1993:

You are wrong. They only played the chorus - i.e. everything after GWLAD! GWLAD! - of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, then SOMETIMES played the entirety of GSTQ, sometimes only the verse.

There are clips on TV Ark and YouTube proving this.
