An Early Day Motion has been raised in Parliament to reinstate the National Anthem to air on BBC1 before handing to the BBC News Channel.

I note this is not the first time Andrew Rosindell has raised this in Parliament - last in 2002 I believe. Clearly it didn't get anywhere though.

What's your opinion?

Well there is no logical reason to do this.

I'm fairly certain I've heard God Save the Queen on BBC1 more recently than 1997. It served as a presentational device but it would seem wrong having it linking in to overnight News bulletins. What if there is some sort of Royal scandal which there are linking in to?

I think it'd be weird. The National Anthem being played out at the end of the day was of its time and I think it'd be considered old fashioned by most today. Also, God Save The Queen is a dirge. I'm not saying that with any republican prejudice, I just find it droll. We need a new national anthem, with God Save The Queen considered to be the Royal Anthem, as it is in Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. We also need an English National Anthem. It's stupid how God Save The Queen is played at England matches, especially when the match is against another UK team.

I agree, it's a bloody awful tune. If they bring it back with BBC 1 closedowns, then to balance things, LWT's start up should also be reinstated Laughing

Of course Radio 4 have continued to play it at closedown, though it sounds more in place there (and going by the reaction when they ditched their startup tune they wouldn't dare get rid of it from there!)

If it had stayed on BBC 1 it probably wouldn't have seemed odd being there. Though now it has gone it shouldn't return

Well, yeah. Kind of like how the Coronation Street theme tune isn't considered old-fashioned. Still, like you say, the boat has sailed.

God Save The Queen to round off the night's main broadcast on Radio 4 does work well. Although not as well as the old closedown silence post-anthem, I think R4's retaining of a very traditional end of night procedure sets a suitable mood - and the tendency for a brief pause always followed by the pips is the bridge (in the WS handover) that manages to help make the practice work. If BBC One went straight from the anthem into a Lowe BBC News sting as they currently do with the usual symbols, I do think the switch would be jarring. A proper 'goodnight' from continuity before the anthem, and just given room to breathe either side, I think it could still work.

However, ultimately: if there was a time to call for its return, it was probably circa 1998... It's so far gone that for it to show up again now would not instantly seem like a resumption. In fact, would alter what has always been the normal flow of presentation into a BBC News handover.

Not utterly against the idea if well done... I just don't believe in actively calling for it to be 'reinstated' given the way in which BBC One's end-of-schedule approach has changed and actually, now established itself over 16 years.

BBC One close downs definitely need sorting out. Crashing in to BBC News looks terrible. The obvious solution is to close down on the hour or half hour and if playing the National Anthem on some days helps pad it out a bit then that can only be a good thing. Of course, a menu showing tomorrows programmes and a bit of light jazz would be just as good.

How long do you think the national anthem is? Laughing

This just seems a very archaic idea with no real purpose or need.

I never understood why they aired the anthem in the first place.

I actually think it's a good idea. The crash into BBC NEWS is not great and it would flag up the end of programming on BBC one and the start of a simulcast. God Save the Queens is only a droll when the arrangement is bad. The last arrangement played in 1997 wasn't bad at all and the arrangement for the last night of the proms is epic. So I say bring it back after all its going to played sometime after 12:30am most nights anyway.
