+1 channels are a waste of limited DTT capacity and just clog up the epg - I wouldn't mind so much if I had the option to delete them but I don't.

Really?
I just ignore the channels I'm not watching, I find that a much better solution than deleting them.

Good for you. I'd rather have the option to tidy up my EPG. Endless scrolling through crap...

Windows Media Center works well for me. You can edit the EPG as much as you like.

Many Freeview TVs and boxes allow you to skip channels at the very least. My favourite feature is the ability to rename channels which I can do on every Freeview capable product I've used.

Pretty sure you can hide them as well if you set up your 'favourite channels'...

Just like BBC1 HD on satellite and Freeview then.

On Freeview in Scotland though you can get BBC 1 Scotland HD on channel 101...

If viewers live in Ireland they can get BBC 1 Northern Ireland HD from the Astra FTA Satellite, Freeview & Sky as well. It is the same story for Welsh viewers as well to coincide with last years DSO.

I think this idea of the new timeshifted channel for BBC 1 is a good one. I am just thinking of how it's presentation is going to look before the launch for next year.

Will this channel need a new logo when it launches next year?

No. It's a timeshifted channel. It will probably have a DOG but otherwise it will look the same as BBC One.

Not if you have a limit on how many channels you can favourite like on Sky.

Correct, they'll just create a +1 device like the HD one, which as you say, will be used as a DOG.

BBC One HD hasn't had a DOG for over a year, but I wonder whether they will have to include one, if only to try to stop the same deluded comments about breakfast programme clocks being 'wrong'..

I don't think any +1 specific idents will be produced. In fact, I think only Sky's Entertainment/Sports/News channels now produce HD specific idents or break-bumpers, never mind +1s.

Many people have PVRs and access to catch-up, but they don't use them (such as my Sister), so +1 channels do still increase access to programmes. It's going to provide a service, even if it simply duplicates what is already available to many.

I can't imagine this will take much time to set up so we should see it launch soon. The new wave of HD channels hasn't been discussed much - are they still happening at the end of this year, or when?

Think late 2013 or early 2014 was the last timescale I heard?

BBC Red Button HD becomes BBC Three HD/CBBC HD on the existing PSB HD mux, whilst BBC News HD and BBC Four HD / CBeebies HD on one of the two new (restricted area) HD muxes.

It may be that they stagger the launch of the two new HD muxes? Be good if they could launch by Christmas.

Suspect BBC Red Button HD will remain until Doctor Who 50th anniversary as they need a 3D outlet...

The extra HD muxes will reach "over 50% of UK households" in time for Christmas, according to Arqiva. And there are rumours saying the extra BBC HD channels will begin around 10th December. (These are just rumours though - although reported as fact in some quarters, if they are fact then there's someone leaking info!)

+1 channels are quite useful with PVRs - as you can cope with record clashes more easily. (I think Freeview/Freesat+ allows some intelligent use of +1s to do this)

Yes, my Freeview PVR offers alternatives if there is a clash - usually the +1 if available. With that idea in mind though the viewer would arguably benefit as much from the BBC just repeating primetime programming overnight - without the cost of extra channels. Obviously an increasing amount is repeated with signing, but a repeat without signing would arguably be a better use than simulcasting the news channel.

Going off on a tangent though with these iPlayer channels they're talking about introducing signed simulcasts would surely score some PSB points. I guess any signed programmes on the iPlayer are only available after a show has aired in the sign zone.
