I'm disappointed that the BBC has chosen to launch an unneeded +1 version of BBC One. It's bad enough that other channels chose to have +1 timeshift channels, but with the high availability of DVR devices, on demand catch-up services like iPlayer, (and various somewhat less legal methods to watch shows you've missed) +1 channels are effectively surplus to requirements. A waste of broadcast space, especially on the limited bandwidth of DTT.

Yes, screw everyone who doesn't have a DVR or forgets to set it.

If they were unnecessary all the other networks would have gotten rid of them years ago.
Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, it's about time they did this. Shame it isn't BBC2 as well, but they could probably only get one more Freeview slot.

I wonder how they are going to bring it to Freeview. An SD stream using vacant capacity on the existing HD mux would make the most sense.

If they are going cram an extra stream onto Mux 1, it would be more interesting if they made BBC Three or Four 24 hours instead. BBC One +1 could timeshare with one of the children's channels.

My parents have Sky+HD with the built-in on demand, and yet still watch +1 channels - simply because it still easier than setting a recording or starting a download, and it also gives more opportunity to watch the channel and let it guide one into what to watch. Not everyone wants to be chopping and changing between recordings and downloads in a night's viewing.

If +1 channels were surplus to requirements, then hundreds of thousands wouldn't be watching them - however, they do.

I think the problem people have here is that they feel because the BBC are launching a new channel and it's just a time shifted channel they're missing out on the BBC creating a channel with new content instead.

The fact is though, it's a very cost effective way for the corporation to make sure there is more chances for people to view BBC content. I watch stuff on demand, but with linear viewing I end up watching and enjoying stuff I wouldn't think of watching on iPlayer and if I had the facilities to record I wouldn't think to bother.

I used to see these channels as cheap way for commercial broadcasters to sell extra advertising space, with very tiny costs compared to setting up a new service. But I can see how they are very useful to people now and will offer value to the licence payer.

Tony Hall seems to be a having a really positive effect on the BBC, a far cry from the damaging Mark Thompson days, when there was talk of the possibility of of BBC Three closing. That seems a million miles away with Tony's recent moves.

Couldn't have put it better myself. The excuse of +1 channels being exactly the same as having the iPlayer are completely ridiculous - they are very different.

Sometimes you need a +1 channel when you have two programmes recording and want to watch a third, happens every couple of months with the 9pm programmes.

Yes to some seems a waste but they probs havent enough money to make a new channel with new programmes - this is seen the best option with a low budget.

+1 channels are a waste of limited DTT capacity and just clog up the epg - I wouldn't mind so much if I had the option to delete them but I don't.

Sad to the see the BBC aping their commercial rivals. Could they not come up with something more innovative than +1? Although, there is very little point of difference between BBC One and the rest.

Will this service be the national version of BBC One or are they going to re broadcast all the nations and regions?

Good question! Smile Given that English Regions on BBC One HD hasn't even happened yet, I wouldn't hold out too much hope of BBC One +1 having any/all of the nations/regions at launch.

Taking into account sub-regions and all, I think there's about 18 variants of BBC One, isn't there?

Multiply that by 3 (i.e. SD and HD and "+1"), that's an awful lot of feeds that the Beeb have to negotiate with Sky/Virgin etc for mutually-agreeable carriage terms. And if the Beeb still insist on "platform neutrality", then us Freeview viewers will have to suffer holding cards too (as we currently still do with BBC One HD).

Really?
I just ignore the channels I'm not watching, I find that a much better solution than deleting them.

Good for you. I'd rather have the option to tidy up my EPG. Endless scrolling through crap...

I don't know how much this channel will cost to broadcast (including all transmission and platform fees), but whatever it costs, I think this cash is much better spent on programmes - the BBC has more avenues than most for catch up, with an iPlayer app on nearly every platform.

Are you suggesting that BBC1+1 is more of a "waste" than one of the many god awful shopping channels?
